i think its given on a societal level, but earned on a personal level.

Thoughts?

its given, now if they trying to disrespect me, then i would give them the same energy."bring back waiting period asap"

You summed it up pretty well.

From a societal standpoint, everyone is expected to respect one another. It's normative behavior that we come to believe will be upheld by all.

On a more intimate level, people can determine whom they give their respect to. Individually, we're able to judge a person's character and hold our own sentiments towards them, whether we express them or not.

I suppose the two come to a head in some instances. Say you're at a dinner and a person you personally have no respect for wins an award for being an outstanding citizen. It goes without saying that you will be inclined to show some respect and clap along with the rest of the audience.

Partially earned / partially given. Earned by what you do. Given by the type of person you are.

Earned.

Which can be done based on your own inherent tendencies to respect something you find in someone else that you admire.

Someone earning your respect could take as little as 1 sec. based on a smile, how they carry themselves, how they interact with their family/peers, etc.

Giving respect seems like what people do with royalty....like why do I need to respect your title? Prince William I respect cause dude served military time and has done things for charity....don't really respect his title but his character is top notch.

Both ..

You give respect without knowing someone because of your morals. Once the person you are giving respect to gets out of line, then that **** is revoke and it has to be earned.

When you are dealing with your PEER group, for the most part the respect it's earned.

You start with the base level and depending on your social standing, career, what you wear and history it goes up or down. Then you earn the rest.

You must give it.
Treat others how you want them to treat you.
Be the change you want to see.
*Insert additional wise cliche here*

Given, but if the person is disrespectful in any form it is then taken away and would have to be earned back.

Given until the person ***** up or shows character you aren't fond of I guess.

Earned. Always earned.

People who give it freely aren't really giving respect, just the hollow notion of it.

I think the main problem ppl have with the question and automatically giving respect is that they think if you don't all that is left is disrespect. It's not a two extremes situation. Just because I don't love you doesn't mean I hate you. A lot of ppl misunderstand and can not grasp that so they're very confused when faced with the issue.
