Real talk.  August 2009, I got fired from this small accounting firm I was at for about 3 yrs.  I haven't come to grips with what happened to get me ****canned because I got some lame !*% responses from HR and my managers.  I haven't been able to contact a manager since and HR said I couldn't get a reference because that was their firm's policy for all terminated for legal reasons (#%@$+!@+ IMO and totally %$!@%% my career up)

I was dubbed a "rising star" my first year and had some ups and downs since with my managers but worked hard for them.  After every performance review, I always got a bonus which signaled to me I was aight but also some you need to work *$@*.

Today I thought it about it hard.  Then it hit me just now that in my exit interview, they kept saying "If you didn;t have enough to do, you should of asked ( I was like what? yall know i'm grinding always)" sprinkled in between" you're not detail-oriented enough for a 3yr dude " and some "you give back blank stares when your are questioned about things (I like to respond when I have thought a thru question first and not just sputter #%@$+!@+). I was like @%% yall talking about.  That *$@* is coming from left field.

I then remembered today I got hit with the Websense tracking on the internet one time a week before the canning.  I went to dump.com (previous porn site but by that time was as it is today a family friendly video/picture site).  Man I should've addressed this real quick but I figured the could see the site for themselves if I was ever questioned.  It came up as "sexual/adult oriented."  I also remembered I said tax was boring and thought everyone would nod and agree but the Director took it all serious and was like then you know where the door is then son.

What was my downfall?

Welcome to NT, unless this is just a different sn

but I doubt it was the website, because usually someone would of said something to you.

It was probably your attitude, and getting on the wrong side of your director didn't help either.

The laws are different in the US than Canada, so some of my info may not be applicable, but in BC I know there is a certain time limit where you can get your provincial (state) labour union or tribunal to look at a firing to see if it was legally defensible or if you have a case for severance or in some cases the option of re-instatement. So a year and a half might still be within that time limit.

If your state has a tribunal or a labour board, and you really want to know, they will be able to tell you if you have a case.

But from my experience, you can't fire someone because they weren't a good fit without severance, or some continuing documentation of incidents that show no improvement in performance/attitude leading up to the firing. If this was the first time you heard all of this was in your exit interview, that sounds pretty bogus.

I got unemployment and eventually took a job at a startup in Jan 2010.  but man that whole experience hurt esp no reference part and getting rehired.  Set me back career-wise like 2 years.  wordup on the smartphone too broke at the time.

Saying "tax is boring" in front of the director, none the less, was your key to the exit. Especially while multiple people were around...tax is the firms bread and butter, I doubt he will joke about it (even if he agrees). That's like a firefighter saying "putting out fires is boring" - I bet you would want him fighting fires in your district.

Sidenote: Welcome to NT if this is your first post.
