I have a degree in IT, got my Net+,A+ this summer. I was told if you dont get your certs by Dec.31st(comp tia) you'll have to renew them every 3 yrs or so. I was working on my Security + but my job threw a #+#++%%% of projects on our group so I've been pretty hammered. Sidenote anyone have experience with blade servers/sans/vmware
But back to OP, depending on what job your trying to get you'll prob need experience also. Certs didn't help get my job but it'll prob help me get another job if I quit. To me they are just like interns, just show you know/have experience in the field. Next up on my list Security and CCNA, need some study material for CCNA

I been working in the IT field for 4 years and I graduated with a BS in I.T. 6 months ago. I didnt have my A+ but I had experienced working during school and the summertime. I got my position as an IT Specialist because of my experience with no certification but I have to get certified within the year. I just finished my 1st part of the A+ cert and I'm gonna take the 2nd part next week. I strongly recommend getting experience and as many certs as you can cuz it will make you more desirable to employees.
Industry standard is A+ and the Microsoft Certs.
I did a lot of volunteering for small companies, nonprofit organizations, community centers etc. on small IT projects and support. It give me experience, reference and connections. Volunteering looks great on resumes also.

^^ Deezamn. I recently graduated with a B.S. in Information Technology and I will say that experience does conquer all, especially for enrty level jobs. Configuring Network printers, re-imaging computers, SYSprep, Key troubleshooting tips, etc. That def help me prepare for my position now as a PC System/Software Analyst for a local Housing Authority. Like other users said...learn on your own!!! I know most of my tips/tricks from personal experience. I can honestly say that 65% of the stuff I know is b/c I taught myself through trial and error.

I too have been thinking about getting a comptia network+ cert, but I've read numerous places online (articles written by managers) that say having the cert with no experience is suspect. I know I'm going to be eaten alive next year without experience. I'm hoping my senior web based system project will help me out.

Planning on taking the network + in a few weeks. I have some pdf ebooks for ccna and the network plus if you need them pm me. I have been studying with trainsignal network plus products with Ed Liberman. Very informative course.

I got my CCNA a couple years ago over a span of 3 months - self study... Lol I was not about to drop any money for a class.
My first job out of college got me closer to 100k than it did to zero
What part of IT r u going for tho? You're not very valuable to employers unless you have a solid grap of something.. ie. Networking/Software Engineering/etc.
if you're in college... INTERNSHIPS!!! JOB FAIRS!!! 3.5 + on the GPA!!! EMPLOYERS WANT SMART KIDS. If you have no real career experience, the GPA is all you're being judged by, unless you really know people.
