Hey NT, I was looking into getting a VPN service, and I understand that there are some good services for a fee. However, as I'm trying to save money for college tuition and gas, I would love to get a free VPN service.
That said, does anyone on NT use a free VPN service and does it work? If I'm out of luck that is all right, I'll just shell out the money, but I would like to cut corners on cost here.

Thanks in advance.

oh really? so you think I don't need one? I am currently living in an apartment complex and thought that was what I needed to prevent people from leeching onto my network, which has happened a few times and really just gets past my comfort level with my internet security. I wanted to make sure my internet was safe from unwanted invaders. I was talking to this dude I know who said he could help me (dude said he was good with IT/computers), and mentioned something about how a VPN service blocks incoming IP's or pretty much other people.

If you dont want people leeching on your network then you should just beef up your router and step up your firewall game. A VPN is really used to hide your data from the network provider/server.

If you're worried about home security, just use WPA-PSK2 encryption.  That will keep people out of your home network.  Especially if you use a password that isn't just alphabetic.  NOW... If you use open networks at coffee shops or book stores then a VPN is a good idea since it'll keep the data going to and from your computer secure.

thanks guys, you have all been a real help to me.
I think I'll look into the WPA security password route. It sounds like that is the thing I was looking for. Thanks.
