I'm putting on the full court press this year since it's my last summer before I go to business school. I'll probably play about 20 events. First event is the 1.5k on monday. Skipping the 1k lotto that started today.

Sweat me on twitter at @galenwsop.

Good luck, Galen! For those of us who don't log on to Twitter, keep us updated on NT on your progress, too.

Busted first event, the 1.5k FR NLHE today. Started with 4.5k, chipped up to about 7k, lost a 10k pot right before break to this mouth breathing idiot from south america who was just pressing buttons with no plan. Got up to 3k, then slid to 2k, then stole a few times to get back up to 2.5k.

at 75/150 raised to 400 from CO with JJ, SB 3bet to 1500, I ship for 2500 he obv snaps with KQ and gets there, gg.

Had a pretty sick first hand of the tournament: SA idiot limps, CO limps at 25/50, I raise to 225 from button wit Js8h. Flop is 834ddd. I cbet like 300, he flats. Turn is Kd, check/cehck. River is 9d putting out 5 diamonds. He bets about 90% of pot and I tank call with no diamonds, and he shows 6h4h and we chop.

Can't be in Vegas for more that 3 days at a time

, and even that is pushing it.

Damn, that sucks you busted out.

That first hand is pretty sick.

What's the next event for you?

And what exactly is the point of playing so foolishly in the first hand of the tournament? Especially when you havent got a feel for your opponents yet and you know that the majority of your opponents are not very good and thus variance will be extremely high. As an experienced poker player you should know better than to play so recklessly early on in tournaments...especially against 'idiots'.

good luck on the rest of your events

I use to make it down there every year for the lower buy in events, but after a while it seemed like a crap shoot for me

Ugh, me too. Last year I would just come for a 4-5 days then fly back, and I did that like 3-4 times.

Just like last year, I wasn't able to sleep before my first event. I went to bed at 3:30 and was wide awake until 7am when I finally dozed off. Woke up an hour and a half later at 8:30 wide awake and didn't even bother trying to go back to sleep, just lay in bed.

For some reason, I have trouble eating too. I am just never hungry.

I dunno, a bunch. Most of the "big name" pros that you see on TV aren't actually any good at poker. Vitaly Lunkin was at my table today, he played pretty standard. I doubt I could be able to get up the courage to look Phil in the eye and say anything, though.

are you going to participate in the main event as welll?

Maybe. I have a flight to Hawaii with my fam that conflicts if I make it to Day 4. So, if I can own more than 5k of myself, I'll probably play. Otherwise, not worth it.

Yeah, although I might play some of the minbet events if I get really bored.

It's not that bad. I busted in the 3rd level, which is fine. Busting out early is like the second best result you can have in a poker tournament.

I'll either play the Venetian 1k tomorrow or just put in a full session online, and then the WSOP 1.5k on Wednesday.

It was MY first hand, not THE first hand, I didn't make that clear. And, I don't really need any read other than to know he's from South America or Italy to make that call.

And also, pretty much lol at your whole post.

Oh the irony of your post my friend

He was obviously isolating the limper (who is limping a marginal hand), and playing a hand very easy to play J8s IN POSITION where is is representing a strong hand that plays well post flop.  Also made a good read, most likely that if the player had Ad, the player would have raised preflop with an ace or check/raised the flop with such a big draw and the strong river bet would only bet with a high flush or bluff, obviously as we've said he can eliminate the high flush.  Players like YOU are why he spends 6 weeks in vegas

I have some friends still in the 50k mix game -- wish I was down there now, hopefully will make it down in a few weeks.

Always nice to see some poker posts on NT

good luck sir, its my goal in a few years to go plan in the main event.....

my bank roll is at 2k just off poker winnings so lets see how it goes.

Probably playing in the Venetian 1k in 10 hours, but I will be annoyed if I make Day-2 with a small stack and have to come back at 4pm and end up missing Wednesday's 1.5k WSOP.

I wanna sweat Bakes in the 50k, but that starts at 3pm so we'll see if I make it any longer than I did today.

and sportinjordans got it basically right, which is nice since it saves me some typing.

But, anybody who seriously grinds poker knows that geographical stereotypes are a huge part of the game, and out of all the geographical stereotypes, the playing styles of south americans and italians are just so, so, so common.

When I didn't get c/r on the flop, there is basically a 0.0% chance that he has Ad, and he never bets the river that big with Qd, and he obv can't have Kd. To be honest, my mistake in the hand might have been flatting for the chop instead of shipping it in as a bluff.

And isoing bad players with random J8 type hands from the button is like so super standard it's not even worth discussing.

First of all, him clarifying that it was 'my first hand of the tournament' changes things as he probably got to watch his opponents play several hands and he began to get a feel of what kind of players they were. I thought he meant 'first hand of the tournament' as if he didnt know anything about his opponents.

Secondly, everything you said makes sense and is rational. The thing most people forget to remember is that playing rationally usually works best against other rational players who have a solid understanding of the game. You can play perfect poker and make perfect and completely rational decisions but it wont matter if an irrational and weak player gets lucky and beats you. Thats why I dont even bother trying to bluff crappy players because I know they'll call you with literally anything...ace high, king high, 3rd pair, etc. Just look at the hand OP described. He C-bet the flop and the guy called with 2nd pair and he wasnt even holding any diamonds. OP made a rational decision but the caller did not. Whats the point of gambling against irrational players so early on in tournaments when your hand isnt even that strong and you know your 'idiot' opponent can very well have you beat on that kind of board? Sometimes its better to play conservative against bad players and let them self-destruct...

Good luck kid
