WALTHAM, Mass. -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Allen Iverson will not make the trip to Boston for Friday's game against the Celtics because of left knee arthritis and a left shoulder contusion, according to the team.

That means the 76ers will be without both of their top ball-handlers, as Lou Williams remains sidelined from a broken jaw. Iverson underwent an MRI exam Thursday, revealing the extent of his injuries.

The 76ers (6-19) have lost 13 of their past 14.

In five games with the 76ers, Iverson is averaging 15.6 points and 4.2 assists.

"I kinda heard he was battling a couple injuries, but still playing," Celtics captain Paul Pierce said. "There would have been a great buzz in the building [Friday] to have Iverson back. But, hey, we still gotta show up and play."
Iverson misses second straight game
PHILADELPHIA -- Allen Iverson missed his second straight game for the Philadelphia 76ers because of arthritis in his left knee.

Sixers coach Eddie Jordan made the announcement before Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, saying Iverson will not return until Philadelphia's game against Portland on Dec. 28 at the earliest.

"Rest is the best thing for him, for about a week now," Jordan said. "He feels confident that he'll feel great the rest of the year."

The 34-year-old Iverson, who also sat out Friday's win over the Boston Celtics, is averaging 14.4 points in eight games with Philadelphia and Memphis this season.

The Sixers received good news with guard Lou Williams returning to the lineup after missing 12 games with a broken jaw. Williams was hurt in a Nov. 24 game against Washington and had surgery the next morning. He was expected to miss at least eight weeks.

Jordan said Williams, whose injury prompted the team to sign Iverson, will be eased into the rotation as a reserve. Williams is averaging 17.4 points with 14 starts this season.

"He has looked great in practices," Jordan said. "He had a burst of energy. He took a couple of hits and felt fine. [We'll play him for] a few minutes here, a few minutes there."

With Williams back, Jordan will have to address the issue of playing time when Iverson returns.

"I need to buy a nice $100 bottle of wine to sort that out," he said. "That would be some thought process, a good thought process. We have some good, skilled guards and it's just a matter of how does it fit."

He's looked decent in his return. No surprise he's having injury problems given his age, history of playing style, and the fact he sat out so long andprobably wasn't working out.

It looks like his "decline" came outta nowhere. Maybe I'm calling it too soon, but in Denver, he was still THAT dude, alongside Melo. Detroit, well, we know how that went. And now this. I guess dude was right, he needs to play major minutes in order to be effective. Without that, he's witheringaway.

Damn that sucks poor AI. I want to see him put up those 1999 numbers

I would also like to see pigs fly and win the lottery twice.

He had his knee drained before the game on Wednesday. They made it seem like it was nothing. I hope he plays when they come to D.C. on Tuesday.

(*&^%$!!! I have tickets to tonight's Sixers vs. Celtics game too! I paid extra just to see Iverson play! (&^$!!!!!
Edit: You know what? Screw AI. I remember he used to play with so many injuries for the Sixers. Now when they are losing, he wants to miss a game. He couldhave made it through to the weekend. After coming close to beating the Cavs, he could have been a leader and went out there and show that they can stand up tothe Celtics too. Screw you Iverson. Yes, I am mad!!!

So are you saying that teams not playing him gave him a legit reason for being out of playing shape and then being disgnosed with arthritis? Surely, I'mreading that wrong.

He just started getting back into basketball shape, I hope he'll still be able to play

A.I gone bounce back, given the team that he is not on sucks. I'm not even an A.I fan but you will see.

That was the whole point of not trying to play 30+ minutes a night right off the bat because he wasn't playing basketball in the off-season.

Dude can roll outta bed and do 27 and 6 a night, even at age 34.

No doubt.

He's AI.
