Team Red is finally back together and in New York. But how happy will they be putting on a show in Long Island after spending more time than expected in Saudi Arabia, and just days before heading to Europe?
The Headliner(s)
We’re going to be talking about WHY Friday’s SmackDown was a NXT-centric show for a long time. But seeing as the announcement Survivor Series would be a three brand show came before Vince McMahon’s Saudi Arabian folly led to air travel issues for 98% of his roster, we were probably always going to get an “invasion” from the black-and-gold brand at some point.
It was fun! And exciting to see some of the talented people from WWE’s Wednesday night show get a spotlight on Fox!
Now, why should we care? How is this “invasion” different from last year’s November Raw vs. SmackDown attacks? Or even the infamous WCW/ECW angle from earlier this century?
This will be the third straight year the littlest Big 4 PPV will be a battle for “brand supremacy”. In 2017 and 2018, Team Red sneaking onto Team Blue’s show and vice-versa sparked our imaginations and... ultimately led to nothing much.
In 2019, the addition of NXT does make for a new dynamic. Triple H’s show is all growns up, but it’s still part of the developmental program (it used to solely be that, now it’s only a small part of the brand’s mission statement, but it’s still a component). Heck, Raw and SmackDown are usually referred to as the “main roster”. The gang from Florida have only been on national television for a couple months, and appearances on PPV have been rare for NXT wrestlers There’s plenty of reasons why Adam Cole, Shayna Baszler & crew would have chips on their shoulders.
But this is also the year we got the Wild Card Rule, and the brand assignments from last month’s draft were immediately ignored whenever booking or promotional needs called for them to be. Michael Cole’s oft-repeated line about Survivor Series being “the one time a year when the stars of Raw and SmackDown collide” is more of a lie than ever. If NXT makes a battle for brand supremacy more interesting, everything else about the WWE landscape this year makes it less so.

There’s a pretty easy fix to the problem. It’s the same solution which was available to WWE last year, and for every show they run. The unwillingness to have their matches mean something is never more glaring than it is at Survivor Series, though.
Give the brand who wins the night the #30 spot in each Royal Rumble match. And/or have each show start the night with 10 spots in each Rumble, then when someone from one show pins or submits someone from another, the winner’s brand gets one of the loser’s brands spots.
But those are just ideas, the point is... do something! It’s going to be fun for NXT fans to have a rooting interest, but like the excitement from past invasions, that’s a short-term fix. WWE has to give us a reason to care about Survivor Series. Maybe they’ll start tonight on Raw.
The title scene
Probably not too surprising considering the Saudi travel drama, but there’s no official preview as of this writing. We’ll do our best...
After doing what they probably should have done at Hell in a Cell, Bray Wyatt is Universal champ. He was drafted to SmackDown, though, so Brock Lesnar and the WWE championship are coming back to Raw, since Brock does whatever he wants. It’s pretty much the laziest way they could have done this, but whatever. The big question for Monday nights is, will Seth Rollins continue to chase a top belt? Or will he quietly exit the main event scene for a while?
After a clean win over Kairi Sane last week, Raw Women’s champion Becky Lynch clearly seems to be set for a collision with Sane’s partner in the Women’s Tag Team title-holding Kabuki Warriors. Where a Royal Rumble rematch with Asuka fits into a possible showdown with her counterparts Baszler and Bayley in Chicagoland later this month is less clear.
They’re not the Best In The World - that would United States champ AJ Styles’ buddies Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows. The O.C. duo pinned Raw Tag Team titleists Viking Raiders to win Crown Jewel’s World Cup Tag Turmoil. That should set them up as Erik & Ivar’s next challengers, but maybe WWE will just try to forget their trip to Riyadh ever happened.
But that would mean ignoring that Samir Singh pinned R-Truth on the ramp during the pre-show to become the 24/7 champ, and avenge his brother Sunil’s loss to Truth moments before in the process.
Other stuff to keep an eye on
- As part of Team Hogan’s win over Team Flair last Thursday, Randy Orton and Ricochet’s program continued, with The One And Only getting a measure of revenge on The Viper for that sweet RKO outta nowhere last Monday.
- Rusev’s issues with Bobby Lashley continued in that match as well, but compared to being outed as a sex addict, low-blowed, and forced to watch your wife make out with her lover AGAIN, getting a win over Bob’s team probably wasn’t entirely satisfying for the Bulgarian Brute.
- AOP and Aleister Black are still sitting in separate rooms talking about wanting to fight.
It’s the Crown Jewel fallout show!
What will you be looking for on Raw tonight?
