Just bought a new puppy! Tips needed!

^yes shots and all medical exams first.

Teach your puppy the rules early. Potty training that is. I taught my dog using puppy pads, and I just moved them closer to the door every time.

Cute puppy. Treat him/her with love as well as your respect. Don't hit your dog no matter how angry you are, a strong no is just as strong with no abuse and mistrust to follow up with it.

Good luck

Hope you got time for your new puppy.. It's going to take a lot of time and patience.. Hope you are ready it's a big commitment

introduce your puppy to new people and other dogs early...get 'em socialized early

should've adopted..

don't have krux over.
And this.

Just make sure you teach your dog that you run the show, not him/her...

Teach Bite Inhibition early and enroll in some young puppy classes so that it can learn that from other puppies as well... No one likes a small dog that gets mouthy due to lack of training.

Control barking early as well... Correct the dog in early stages, similarly to biting... No one likes a small dog that barks all the damn time.

Take it out to go to the bathroom twice an hour for a few weeks... Eventually itll get the picture, reward on successful trips.

CRATE TRAIN RIGHT NOW!  It's gonna SUCK for a few nights but you really should crate train overnight until its accustomed to the crate. Also, a smaller crate than you think you may need later in life is probably the best bet.  My puppy HATED his crate when we started... It was way too big for him... Once I got a small crate to keep him in until he outgrew it 3 months later, he was fine.

Supervise the dog constantly.

Small breed dog? Pass.... Lol JP

They're for inside only so introducing them to people isn't that important but still needs to be done. Are you using potty pads or takin it out?

question about people who own dogs.. particularly without a big family or additional eyes to look after it.

how can you train a puppy / give it enough time while working a full days worth of work monday through friday??

Buy a really small dog house so he stops growing and stays cute forever

^ If you have a dog and do that, give it to someone who can actually take care of it instead of locking it in a kennel.

Hopefully your dog will be familiar with the rules of the house (no peeing on the floor, no scratching up the couch ect.) so you could just leave your dog to wander the house while you're away for a few hours. Just leave enough food and water for the day depending on how long you will be gone.

Or get a relative/neighbor to watch your dog while you're gone.

OP does it have any of its shots?

did you get it from a breeder petstore or just somebody you know?

we didnt use potty pads, if he went in the carpet he got his nosed rubbed in it..

in less than a week he was going to the door when he needed to go.

the dog will only be as good as you train it to be.

i spent a whole week doing nothing but training with my dog, and he now sits, shakes rolls over, high 5's,gives kisses, and lays down.

hes a smart little dude, considering he was a stray before we adopted him.

Got him off from our local breeder, they were nice enough to provide instructions for him so he could get used to us.

Be patient and love it.
As far as potty training.. when she went in the house I put her nose close to it and she learned pretty quickly.
Now if she has accidents it's my fault for not letting her out.
For food, try Taste of the Wild. It's grain and corn free. My dog loves it.

You lock it in it's kennel while you're gone.

Don't lock it in its kennel, especially if you are working all day. If you have a spare room, or section of your house/apartment you can block off do that. If he does chew on things, make sure everything is put away.

If not, buy a giant kennel, crate so there is more room and put a toy, blankets, bed whatever . Dogs don't like small spaces, especially 5 days a week all day.

I've never once put my dog in a cage.
Didn't even consider it.
