To be completely honest, from a marketing standpoint I can see Griffey going back to Seattle as a success, but Seattle really needs to move on from the Griffey hoopla (and the Sonics leaving) to bring a new age of sports to Seattle. Seattle sports is at rock bottom right now and I think the last thing they need is to back track to a name from the "glory days" which will only delay the inevitable of him leaving again and then having to find a new identity all over again. Might as well get started now.

I couldn't disagree with you more. The Kid in Seattle as the DH is the perfect fit. When he goes into the hall it will be in a Mariners hat, so why notfinish your career there. He will last a lot longer in the AL than he will in the NL. I could actually see him have an explosive season in Seattle, not so muchin Atlanta.

I'm crossing my fingers that he will be a Mariner

yup that would be the perfect way for him to finish his career

Yep perfect way to go out, on a team that wins 50 games! He wants to win something, that is why he would go to the Braves over the Mariners. I want him to goto Seattle though, he could DH and play a few more years probably

SMH

i hope this is just a rumor and he decides to head to Seattle and finish off his legendary career there...

Bout 10 years too late but I'm happy.
same thing i was thinking. I am pretty sure that pic was taken when Ken Griffey Sr. played forthe Braves. I think Jr was a bat boy back then.

I agree with dmxfury. I thought it made sense that he would come back to Seattle, and we would just DH him like we did with Edgar Martinez. If you put him onthe field then he aint gonna last...prolly just #+** up his hamstring or knee again...

it would be a bad move to go to seattle. M's fans remember Jr as a the kid who put the team on the map, mvp, first ballot HOFer...

it would be just S-A-D to see him back in a M's hat....hitting 240, limping around, going to the DL 3-4 times...hitting 15 hr's...

If the Mariners use him strictly as a DH, I can see him hitting those numbers you listed, maybe even higher.

Aint a done deal yet, but I dont see why he wouldnt join the Braves... Its closer to his family, he wont be playing all 162 games, he will share left fieldwith Diaz... So it works out good, plus he will have less of a chance to getting injured...

AP Source: Griffey returning to Mariners

By GREGG BELL - 21 minutes ago

PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Ken Griffey Jr. has decided to return to the Seattle Mariners. Griffey made the move after an apparent agreement with the Atlanta Braves fell through, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the Mariners had yet to announce the deal.

Griffey's contract is for one year and is believed to be worth $2 million in base salary, plus incentives.

The 39-year-old Griffey is fifth on baseball's career home run list with 611.

Atlanta appeared to be Griffey's choice on Tuesday for the same reason the former Mariners star left Seattle in 2000: geography. The Braves' spring training camp is about a 20-minute drive from the Griffey family home in Orlando, Fla., and Atlanta is about an hour away by plane.

Griffey asked for a trade from the Mariners in 1999 to be closer to home. He eventually got one just before the 2000 season, to Cincinnati.

But after conflicting reports about where the aging star would settle, Griffey ultimately chose to follow through on his proclamation two years ago when he came to Seattle while playing with the Reds - that he wanted to finish his career as a Mariner.

The Mariners have a job as designated hitter and perhaps in left field waiting for him for 2009. The Braves were offering a possible platoon in the outfield - plus that cherished proximity to home.

The Mariners were initially withholding comment Wednesday night, but a team official acknowledged something was brewing.

Seattle had been trying to add a power hitter, and specifically a designated hitter, for months. They were believed to be pursuing Bobby Abreu and Adam Dunn until last week, when Abreu signed with the Los Angeles Angels and Dunn agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals. Seattle also talked to the agent for free agent Garret Anderson.

The Mariners prefer a left-handed bat because the dimensions of pitcher-friendly Safeco Field are shortest in right field.

The configuration fits the left-handed Griffey so well, the Mariners presented him with a framed photo of their stadium before a Reds-Mariners game in 2007, with the words "The House that Griffey Built" across the top. Griffey played just half a season in it before getting the trade he demanded to Cincinnati in 2000.

That was months after he rejected Seattle's offer for $148 million over eight years.

Yet the fans in Seattle still love "Junior," who would give an instant jolt to what appears to be a long rebuilding season.

He made his first opening day start with the Mariners as a 19-year-old in 1989. He stayed 10 more years before the trade to Cincinnati. He has been hampered by injuries since and had arthroscopic knee surgery following the 2008 season, the last half of which he spent with the White Sox.

He is the Mariners' career leader in home runs (398), slugging percentage (.569) and trails only Edgar Martinez in team history in games played with 1,535. He's also second to Martinez in Seattle history in hits, RBIs, extra-base hits, at-bats, doubles, runs and total bases.

Seattle's starting outfield currently has Ichiro Suzuki in right field, Franklin Gutierrez in center and question marks in left. DH is one of the many starting positions open for competition in spring training, a camp that general manager Jack Zduriencik has said will be more like a competitive proving ground for all than a warmup for the season.
