ummm...this is how all polls are conducted.  they pick a variety of people whom they think represents everyone except for maybe the most extreme and they ask them.  you're never going to survey the entire world or even the entire US population just to get some trivial answer.

on a side note...if they asked me, Kobe would be alone at #1 until he stops playing for the Lakers and if he retires as a Laker he will remain my #1 until someone better plays for the Lakers.
