Laptop comparison help

I've found a couple of laptops that look like they'd be good models for me to buy.

Of the two, which would you prefer?

Haha, thanks but no thanks on the Mac. Don't wanna spend $1500+ for something I can get cheaper and enjoy more

But with a 13" MBP I'd get no dedicated graphics card, no HDMI, and would have to purchase Mac compatible software. I prefer Windows anyways. I've tried for years to want to like like Macs and Apple products, but there's just enough that persuades me against the purchase. I can't justify the price.

Asus is the better deal and quality

initial differences between them are 6GB or 8GB of RAM . . . 500GB or 750GB . . . both are negligible.

then the CPU's . . . Intel Core i5 2450M(2.50GHz) vs Intel Core i5 3210M(2.50GHz) . . . again negligible.

then you have 2 different video card philosophies . . . Radeon vs Nvidia . . . anything special you are doing that might better take advantage of either chipset?

And then the Sony Vaio as a BLU-RAY PLAYER. That's definitely a decision-maker. I'd say get the one with the Blu-ray player.

750-500=250gb thats alot more space
2450 means sandybridge and 3210 is Ivy bridge. Ivy is the newer tech and has better power draws and more. That means better battery life.
The Nvidia card is newer tech and you should get the 5000rpm drive. Things will be abit slower when the computer starts up but it will be the same performance wise and you will get better batterylife

That's the information i was looking for. I'm currently on a Sony that has a Blu-Ray drive (wifey will use it, since her computer died not too long ago). Don't need ultra-fast boot-up times as it'll be on hibernate most of the time. Having Ivy Bridge though is a big one for me. battery life is important to me as I'll be in classes and won't have chance to recharge too many times during the day.

Space was negligible in my eyes, but noticed the Sony was faster in read times.

As far as the video cards, I'd like to do some casual gaming. minecraft/red alert/etc. nothing terribly graphics intensive. I'll do most of my gaming on my 360. but i'll also be doing some basic video editing and use of photoshop.

screen resolution on the Sony was nice though at 1600x900, as opposed to 1366 x 768

If you want a blu ray player just pick up a player or a used PS3. You can pick one of those up for cheap on ebay. The nvidia card will and that radeion card are okish.... Dont expect all high setting for video games

Yeah, not expecting super high res games and stuff. just basic ish. I've already got a blu-ray player. and like is aid earlier, i have one on the computer i'm using right now and i never use it. might use it to rip movies, but never to actually play them.

have you considered the Timeline U M5 for $780?



less ram and a slightly slower cpu than the sony & asus, but it has more a more powerful gpu and 20gb ssd for caching and is $120 cheaper than the sony/asus options

yeah i'd only do light gaming. i think i'm gonna go with a a slightly more updated version of the Sony for $30 more. Comes with Ivy Bridge, BD-Rom slot disc, and Nvidia GeForce 640M LE 1GB. Only 4GB but there's an open slot, so I'll probably tack on another two (maybe 4) depending on how i feel the computer is running.
