So a few months ago, I got a job where half of the workers (my department had 200 people by itself) were Fresh Off The Boat mostly from:

Mexico
Guatemala
Puerto Rico
Dominican Republic

...sprinkled in with a few
El Salvador
Cuba
Colombia
Honduras
Costa Rica
Venezualans

At first my main motivation was to talk to Spanish dudes (pause...) Whenever we get a new guy who didn't speak English, we'd have to wait like 5 minutes for the Supervisor to come help and explain things and by then it would be chaos cause we'd be so far behind.

On lunch break, I would go on Google Translate and look up words like "HERE" (ah-kee) or "UP" (ah-ree-bah) or FAST (on-duh-lay) and this helped massively in getting the job done.

So the next week, i start looking up phrases like

"Cuantos Anhos Tienes" (How Old Are You?) - usually you ask an American Girl this and she'll ignore you, but the Spanish girls would smile and tell their age with Pride:wow:. I even went as far as to ask "Cuanto Pesas" (How Much Do you Weigh) and didnt even get slapped  Completely different culture...

At the time, my car had broke down, so I had to go around asking people for a ride. (Donde Vives) (tienes un transporte) (Te Pagare cinco dinero para llevarme a casa). So anyways with this method, I'd ride with a certain female for a week, see if the vibe was right, and if not move on to the next.

The interesting thing, even with Women who did know a little English, the Spanish went a far way in terms of distinguishing yourself. If you were taller than 5'5'' you have a major advantage over the Latino guys. And as far as competing with White Guys + Brothas, knowing Spanish implies you have a higher level of intelligence/earning potential than them.

And it even created somewhat of a "Domino" effect in terms of indirectly getting White and Black girls that work there. After a while, The Spanish girls would pat me on the shoulder, whenever we cross paths, and the American girls would take notice of this. :nthat:

So anyways, I feel like a fool having figured this out when I am close to 30. :ohwell: My body count would probably be upwards of 500 if I knew this at 20.

Anybody else go through this process? And I'm curious to hear from the 2nd generation bi-lingual dudes (Ninjahood etc)

Welcome to the world I’VE lived in since I was 13. :smokin

Replying “un poquito” was damn near instant buns on the Migente.com days whenever a chick asked me if I spoke Spanish. I kinda feel bad I never followed up on a legit lesson after though but whatever:lol

I’m conversational in French and have gone on dates that were mostly French being spoken and a little broken English. If I were to learn Spanish (I want to) I’d easily use French to Spanish translating than English. Knowing multiple languages is a super power.
