LED VS PLASMA

Hello guys im looking for A new tv for my dorm room. i found two tv sets on amazon. One is a Samsung EH6000 full array led tv for around $700 and the second is a LG PM4700 for about $100 cheaper with 3D and smart tv capabilities but only 720P.. I read that plasmas tend to have better picture quality but would a 1080P led have better picture quality than a 720P plasma?

I have an LED LCD and I really can't imagine going with regular LCD or Plasma.

What size is the TV? Because if it's 32" or smaller, you probably won't notice a difference between 720p and 1080p, if it is any bigger, I'd suggest getting the 1080p for sure.

I own a Plasma bought it over a year ago. 1080p good TV. but it wont last longer than 8 - 10 years they say. Also the TV gets HOT!!!!! It gets reallll hot...

If you buy a 720P anything at this point, you're cheating yourself.

Like DaulDierce said, plasmas get really hot. I own a panasonic P50G20, and the image is nice, but it heats up the room like a space heater. Doesnt help that my room is small, but if you're working with more space, go for it. I also dont like the temporary burn in I get on my set either... I think if I were to buy another TV, it wouldn't be a plasma.

How much thicker are plasmas these days compared to LEDs? I love how thin my LEDs are, I mounted them on the wall and it looks like a window, it's less than 1.5" thick.

yup..... I had a 46" LG plasma in im living room and that thing felt like i was sitting in front of a heater.
I have the Samsung D series 46" LED now and picture quality is amazing, that Auto Motion Plus FTW....

But to answer your question OP, LED imo is better than Plasma. Nowdays you can get a Plasma at fairly cheap prices. Also look into the the aspect ratio of the TV. The higher the aspect ratio the better.

Panasonic plasma man.(everybody on the AVSforum raves about them and i bought the ST30 last year and LOVE IT!) You WONT look back if you get one.
You get more deeper natural colors. If your using MOTION SMOOTHER, you get less lag. Than some Samsung's LED motion technology.
They do run warm but not as hot as the tv you have now.
Hell the e8000 LED runs warmer than the st50!!
LED's are cool but havent been perfected yet.

PLEASE do yourself a favor and look up the reviews on the u50 and st50 panasonic plasma. really the only advantage going with the st50 over the u50 is the 3d, motion smoother technology, and the deeper black levels)

You wont be dissapointed!

Samsung and LG are expected to have OLEDs by the end of the year, each retailing at about 9000 grand.4k tvs

and my Onkyo 818 with xt32 Audyssey calibration is ready for it

but Sharps 8k prototype > any 4k tv

Difference between the two is picture quality and energy. For energy purposes we're only talking about a few dollars per year. For picture quality it just depends on what you would be doing with your TV. If you like your TV in a dark setting almost movie atmosphere than Plasma is the way to go. If you watch a lot of TV and throughout the day than the choice is LED.

LEDtv Pros:

Lighter (weight)
Good picture quality throughout the day (great with bright colors)
Energy saver
Lasts

Cons:

Dark pictures are not it's specialty
Glare in lit rooms
Always have to upgrade

Plasma Pros:

Good picture quality for cinematic movies (ex. The Dark Knight)
Cheaper
High resolution and Hz (Plasma's are sold at the highest resolution. ie a LED with the resolution of a plasma is pretty expensive)

Cons:

Dark viewing in the sunlight
If you pause on a picture it can burn the image onto your TV (this would be a issue for me since I tend to always fall to sleep watching netflix or when I'd play Halo. I've seen the health bar and location meter burned into screens).
Heavier
More than likely won't last as long as a LED.

I have a Samsung 52 inch 3D LED Smart TV in my living room that I wish I could move into my bedroom just so I can put a plasma in my living room just for movie nights (I'm a bachelor lol) and off it goes. I have 2 LEDtv's and a LCD in my condo.

Plasma's have definitely more bang for it's buck but a lot of people will find a LED more suited to their liking.

i have a 50' plasma that i have had for about 2 years now. i honestly can't see a difference and it doesn't get as hot as older tv's. I notice the screen burn with things like scoreboards from watching basketball but it only lasts like 30 minutes and you can only see it in dark colors.
in your spot i would go LED because 720 is way behind on the times
