Hank, if you don't mind my asking, how's the experience working out for you so far? Is it a seed, VC, growth equity, or LBO type of shop you recently started?Bernie Madoff is unfortunately considered a legend. But he was never a banker in his career. He was more of an investment manager than anything else, but I can see where you can make the connection with investment banking. A lot of the higher up guys live up to the profile.
From personal experience, I've seen a lot of people whom I used to work with completely lose it and some keep their heads in-place. It really depends on a lot of things and some luck is involved. I would say the most important thing is to watch who you surround yourself with, especially in high finance. They say the mentors and people responsible for your organic professional growth early on play a huge role in what you end up doing down the road.
In Martin Shkreli's case, he was just too bright for his own good and was suffering from a lot of personal issues. Kid moved up way too quickly. I'm younger than him and started a PE firm with some of my old mentors if that puts any perspective into this whole thing.
