There have some rumblings that Dion may be traded on the Draft night for picks, so I was wondering what the consensus opinion was on his value for Cavs.
I'll state my opinion first.
Dion is a good scorer who has a pretty quick first step to blow defenders by on his way to the cup. He's got nice spin moves to avoid defenders on his way, and is strong enough to take the beating and finish inside, although he sometimes shows a lack of concentration by blowing easy layups (more on that later)
Also, although he is somewhat streaky and fades away a little too much, can knock down 3-pointers from deep range.
This season I think he showed improvement in his ball handling and decision making, although his decision making needs to be improved more.
On the other side, although he sometimes plays a good D, often times he loses his defender and allow easy lay-ups or dunks. When he does try to pressure opposing guards, he often plays too aggressively to foul or gamble for steal, which often results in a wide-open lane.
Mentally, he plays pretty intensely, especially on the offensive side. He has shown that he doesn't back down from challenge on multiple occasions.
However, he doesn't concentrate 100% when he plays, which is evident in his free-throw (a guard shooting less than 70% is bad) and missing a seemingly easy layup. This is especially problematic on D, as he is often late on the rotation and lets too many undefended cuts by the man he's supposed to guard.
All in all, I think he is a good scoring option to have on the team, although a more disciplined and focused mindset is desired.
As Cavs stockpile more talents on the team, there is a risk that Dion's touch may be reduced and he becomes not as effective because he's playing without the ball.
But, it is pretty clear that the main player with the ball should be Kyrie, and Dion needs to develop his off-ball game, similar to what Wade developed when he started playing with LeBron: cut to the basket, attack offensive glass, etc. I think he is big and athletic enough to do what Wade did in 2010~2013.
Otherwise, if he continues to resist altering his game, playing him as the first option off the bench may be the only solution. I know Dion has stated that he doesn't really like coming off the bench, but there doesn't seem to be much choice.
I really like his style of play, and don't want to see him go, but we all know that the main dog is Kyrie, and if chemistry continues to be a problem, then trading him might be the only option.
What do you guys think? how valuable is he to the team? what can he fetch in the market if he is on the trading block?
