Sup Fellas (And Ladies)

I'll be graduating from college next month, and i've accepted a job offer in LA (I would be working in the heart of downtown). I don't know too much about the city, but I was hoping that maybe some of you could give me some pointers on searching for a suitable apartment around the area (Suitable as in affordable without having to worrying about getting my head blown off, or car stolen). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'll have to worry about that no matter where you live in LA.  But downtown near olive and 9th is a cool little hipster area, and the fashion school is right there(a parade of honeys from 7am-3pm

).  Rent in that area is like $1200 average, which is dope for a loft or something.  Or you can hit Glendale(persian girl haven

), and rent a guess house out for like around $800 $900 a month, but the you'd have to deal with the traffic tho.  Whats your range on rent?

Yeah, it's all depending on your range. If you don't want to live in the middle of the smog you could always choose to live outside the city, like in Pasadena or something. It'll be a commute, but I prefer having more space personally.

Rent in the good part of downtown with the newly renovated buildings will be expensive. L.A. is a big town with smaller towns around it. I live about 15 mins North of L.A., and it's a middle class area. Even with the current real estate condition, a 1500 sq ft home still averages around $450k or so. Rent is going to be quite expensive unless you want to live in a less than preferred area.

How much are you looking to spend for rent? Do you have a car to commute to work? The good and bad areas are pretty much connected though. You can take Santa Monica Blvd from the ghetto all the way to Beverly Hills and Century City within a 7-10 mile drive.

Glendale = Armenians. If you want Persians, that's Woodland Hills, friend

Sorry about not giving you guys a spending range (That would probably help). I don't want to spend anymore than $1200 a month.

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but aren't Armenians of Parisian decent.  And Woodland Hills is Jews, celeb, and porn star promise land.  Woodland Hills is really a giant mixing pot of people of all ethnic groups with one thing in common, buku bucks.

Get online rent.com, CL, etc.  You'll be able to find a dope loft or something within walking distance from your job for that

You have two options that will help you find a place in your budget. First there is the go-to Craigslist. The only thing to know is only pursue ads that have a phone number and a name of a contact person to deal with. No name or phone # then it's a guaranteed scam. Second you can always contact a Realtor to help you find a rental. A Realtor will have a better lay of the land and be able to meet your needs since L.A. is a new city to you.

You can live in West LA near Santa Monica and find a 1 bedroom for $1200

If you want to drop your standard of living a bit you can easily do North Hollywood.

Either way you're going to have to commute so you need to figure in gas cost and car maintenance into your budget.

Actually Chatsworth has some porn broads too.

Commuting from the valley to downtown LA?

Valley to Downtown is easier now with the extension of the gold line and the blue line. The commute has been cut down by like 30minutes from before

I wouldn't live in downtown unless you want to be around the bums and the hipsters which could be an annoying combination.

If I were you I would look for a place around the Figueroa area but dont go lower than MLK blvd cause thats real hood and dont go over vermont and youll be straight. Around those areas you have public safety trying to take care of students so its a lil safer staying within the boundaries I gave. You will drive 10minutes tops into downtown. Drive around youll see what I mean

rent could be fount for a $800-1200. Just depends what your used to

but LA is expensive overall. Im moving out of an apartment by the mount st marrys area but it is in foreclosure so Im not sure how that will work out. Ive noticed a lot of rental units around tho.

Live downtown. You don't want to deal with LA traffic especially if you're not used to it.

This is true, I went to that school, FIDM, for graphic design. A good 70% of the school is female, majoring in fashion, so they usually dont disappoint. Rent anywhere near there is going to expensive, way past your 1200 range, probably. I wouldn't live in downtown unless youre already coming from a big city. I could never live in downtown, its always so congested, everything feels cramped, and its such a hassle to get anywhere in a car. Especially with the Staples Center nearby, with Laker/Clipper games about three or four nights a week. I'd much rather live in one of the surrounding areas just for the sake of space.

where are you from, OP? Out of state?

Since you're working in the heart of downtown, I would look into renting a place outside of the city near a metrolink or metro rail. They are pretty convenient. Further you are from LA, the less expensive your rent will be. If you take the metro/metrolink you wont have to worry about sitting in traffic.

I work in DTLA (right next to FIDM  ) and I live about 35 miles east from it. I take the metrolink every chance i can. Its about a 1-1.5 hour commute each way (counting leaving the house, parking, waiting for the train, walking to work, etc). But the best part is I could relax, read, work, sleep and not stress about traffic

solid advice here.

its all going to be give and take. personally, i could never work in downtown and deal with that mess. Id much rather live a ways out and find a way to take the metro to work. unfortunately i am not well versed in the LA metro system since I hardly if ever use it, nor do I trek to that side of town. I like to stay in my westside bubble.

not true. West LA (which is still LA city proper) and the surrounding area is pretty safe and you wont really have to worry bout stuff like that. Hell, I live in Playa Vista (which is also technically city of LA) and its like Pleasantville here. I've left my car unlocked before with no issues, and I am never concerned for my own safety walking around my neighborhood.
