Mac Help:Creating An Encrypted Disk Image

I want to create an encrypted disk image for my portable HDD. I followed the guide below but it's not working for me. What may I be doing wrong? Does your HDD need to be completely blank when you try this? Mine was like half full when I tried to create one. Any help is appreciated.

Dude just rename the folder to Hankzilla in Brazil.

Done did that since 3rd grade, I need security.

Would I have to password protect all my folders? Or can I just put all the folders in one giant folder and password protect that? Would that work just as well as creating an encrypted disk image?
