Okay i have two years left in highschool and my grandfather said he will buy me any laptop up to $2000. I customized a macbook pro on apple.com, the 13" 4gb ram 2.53 ghz 320 gb hard drive with apple protection plan and i used the teacher discount because my parents are both teachers and are eligible. I wanted toknow if this computer if i took care of it and did not abuse it,( No gaming excessive music downloading, etc.) would it last me 5-6 years through college? thetotal would come out to with the free ipod with rebate and a printer is roughly 1700. is it worth it?

Any new computer will last that long if you take are of it.

It's definitely going to be outdated by the 3rd year, but you'll be fine.

I'd say go for the 15in, though.

would it be outdated with ram and ghz? because 320 gb is a lot of hard drive and i was thinking a new os update would work when they come out with a new one

Yep, but get Apple Care. Odds are, you'll prob use/carry this everywhere. Things can go wrong, especially during college, so get some insurance. My oldPowerBook g4 15 malfunctioned 3 times. After the 3rd instance, the Apple store guy replaced my broken laptop with this MBP I'm typing on.

Hardware will always become obsolete quickly, but that's just because companies need to "refresh" every few years to attract consumers. My MBP isthe 2nd generation and still runs perfectly.

I'm running on the same 2gig of ram that it came with, no problems. Storage is an issue, but externals are so cheap now.

Like Sol said get the 15... and a good bag to carry it in.

You should be straight. Take a look at computers 5 years old from today. I have a macbook pro that i got Aug. 2007. Thing still works great, applecare is amust though as the battery and trackpad both died on me so far. You can keep upgraded ram as well , dont know if u can go past 8 gigs actually, but you shouldbe straight. If I were to do it all again I would get a netbook for like 300 bucks then get an imac or nice pc for home use.
