Microsoft Word 2007... help needed

Got an essay to write... 500-650 words.

However, I noticed that Word 2007 counts every single "word" as a word.  Words like a, an, or, etc. are all counted as one word.  Is there any way I can change it to the old school style of counting words?

That's the norm as far as I'm concerned. Writing is a big part of my job and that's how I've always counted my words.
