Hey NT, I am in this dilemma where I was suppose to go overseas later on this year with the army but as of today it has been killed. I can go overseas with another unit leaving the same time i would deploy. Now with a year left of school plus ready to get out of undergrad to move towards acquiring  my master's degree. I have a decision to make of do I sacrifice another year of school with going overseas, while taking on-line classes. Would have only one semester left come back at the end of the deployment. Overseas that would give me a financial advance for going to grad school as being debt free and extra cash to live off of while in grad school at University of Maryland(moving from the south). Staying home to finish school I would either go to grad school at LSU or UMD. Also it will give me a jump start into my career and help get my name out even more with the research on obesity I have been doing. Will pray on it later on today but just wanted to hear other people views since im not home.

At the end of the day whatever choice i make will be a win win just a different route in life.

First off OP whats are you getting your masters in, and how old are you?

im 25 will be 26 in september and masters in food science

How is the job market looking for you right now? Would you get something right away or would you have to wait?

If you were a little younger it would be easier. It all really depends on how the job market/want for your major, if you think you can land a quick job making good money then go for it, if you think it will take time then make $.

Just my opinion though.

This.

Why you so concerned about the Masters before you even finish up the undergrad though??

Not as familar with that career/industry, but is a masters needed? Or can you not find work so therefore going back to school, etc..?

You need to post more more details, as is your story is confusing.
Are you saying you joined the army and awaiting deployment? if that's the case isnt the army a 4 yr commitment?
You're also talking about studying obesity, do you a scientific study that includes a lot if lab work or are you referring to more a social study and what does that have to do with your deployment?

Honestly if you feel like you're burnt out with school then use the army as best as you can. But if you're talking about a 4 yr deployment you're better off finishing school and then joining the army

Didnt want to get to much into detail on my first post. I joined the army on a six year contract last year to finish paying for college. I will go to officer training after I get done with my undergrad. Not really burnt out with school since i will be in school for a while with the master program just ready to get it undergrad over. Im pretty sure the army will give me another opportunity to deploy(1 year long) again before my contract is over(pretty damn sure). I plan to work in the lab for most of my career depending on where i end up living wise(lab work gets boring at times). Being in school off and on is what has burnt me out. I dont see the job market for researchers dropping anytime soon since the market stil has more jobs then employees to fill the position.

My undergrad is in Marketing but my passion is in food science helping others. I could go with a undergrad in food science coming out making 50-60k but it will take 2-3yrs longer. I have already talk to the college of food science about switching my undergrad. The dean told me he would love to have me switch to food science for undergrad just not in my best intrest.

job market is fine for my food science degree or just researcher on the east coast south and midwest.

Depends on the job and where you are at.

I didn't need any education for my dream career.

It all depends on what you want to do in life.

I'm first in the family to go to college.
I dont believe school is for everyone.
Making money however....Any person can get a job at McDonalds...making money is EASY
You spend money, waste money, invest money. Money comes and goes. But no one can take away your education.
Education > Money

Repped

Came in here to post exactly that but it's already been mentioned.

Money comes and goes. But everything that I've learned of substance has stayed with me .

What is desirable in a man is his kindness, And it is better to be a poor man than a liar (Prov. 19:22).

The rich do not necessarily find it essential to speak gently to others. According to Proverbs 18:23  the rich man “answers roughly.” The Ebenezer Scrooges of life do not deal kindly with others, but Proverbs implies that kindness is more important than riches. Very specifically, we are told in 19:22 that it is better to be an honest man than a wealthy one, if one must choose between the two.

A GOOD REPUTATION IS BETTER THAN WEALTH.

GODLY CHARACTER IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY. It is more important to be righteous than to be rich. A man’s integrity is more important than his affluence.

Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool (19:1).

Better is a little with righteousness Than great income with injustice (16:8).

“Take my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choicest gold. For wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her” (8:10-11).

How much better it is to get wisdom than gold, And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver (16:16).

“Money isn’t everything,” someone has been quoted as saying “but it’s a long way ahead of whatever is in second place.” Proverbs informs us that not only is money not in first place, it is not even in the running for second place. One reason is that money simply cannot purchase those things in life which are most important.

There are two primary reasons why money fails to make a man secure. The first is that money simply cannot purchase security, for security cannot be bought. There are those who deceive themselves by thinking that wealth offers them security, but this is only imaginary.

A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, And like a high wall in his own imagination (18:11).

The second reason money cannot offer us security is that wealth itself is often only temporary. Not only does our wealth fail to make us secure, our wealth itself is insecure.

Do not weary yourself to gain wealth, Cease from your consideration of it. When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes itself wings, Like an eagle that flies toward the heavens (23:4-5).

The rich man is wise in his own eyes, But the poor who has understanding sees through him (28:11).

The money path sounds legit if you stick with it. But make sure you stick to the plan.

Thanks for the the input from everyone that i have been reading. Not sure if i wrote everything out clearly but im not choosing to drop out of college to continue my military career. I go to a small college so some classes is only offered during spring or fall. I pretty much have to plan my classes a year in advance to make sure i have them for the semester coming up. The only reason I was think of still deploying was to make life a little easier for when i move to DC. Most likely I will go for my PhD since the military pays a percentage of school every year. Im not leaving school, just seeing what everyone thoughst about me taking a different route. Shoot if overseas is easy for what im doing I may finish my degree overseas.
