I suspect it was just a glitch.
Those are the types of ads placed on the "free" Yuku boards. My guess is that, for a moment, the filter keeping those ads at bay was removed, so we essentially "doubled up."
Most sites have those square ads on the right margin these days as it takes better advantage of the widescreen format that's become commonplace in the decade or so since we last updated our layout. It would be one thing to MOVE that square unit from the top center, where it's wasting a ton of space, to the right, but in this case no ads were moved - only ADDED, and the site looked horribly tacky as a result.
Thankfully, it's been rectified.
I'm still waiting for an official explanation, but I doubt many of you even care at this point so long as the problem has been resolved.

hate to grave dig, but I'm getting ads that automatically start playing with full volume. No way to stop them or mute them. What can I do to fix it?

Yeah i guess this too the few times i actually use my laptop. Its annoying AF and slows my comp down too for some reason. No way to turn it off or down unless you click another page, then youre liable to get another commercial/ad.
Mobile basically is the only way to go, which i usually only use my phone anyway except on a release day. Have never tried using mobile browser on the laptop though
