mp4 to avi? can anybody help?

I'm trying to upload an mp4 file to YouTube and it's taking mad long. It says the estimated time is 172 min. for a 3 min. video. I'm wondering if this is because it's in mp4 format? If this is so, will it upload quicker in a different format? if so, what software (free download) or website would you suggest I can convert the mp4 into a file that can upload quicker to YouTube. thanks in advance for anybody that can help.

Freemake

although your internet connection may have a slow upload rate which means converting the video isn't really going to do much (unless you convert into something with less quality at a lower resolution)

Beat me to it. Freemake is very streamlined and does exactly what it says on the tin. Give it a whirl.
