MIDTOWN — Despite massive opposition from riders and even some from board members, the MTA passed a controversial proposal Thursday to raise bus and subway fares, bringing the price of a 30-day unlimited MetroCard to a whopping $104.

The MTA board passed a number of other fare hikes, including the following:
  • The cost of one subway ride will go from $2.25 to $2.50 when you buy a single-ride card. Refills on existing cards will remain at $2.25 per ride.
  • The seven-day card will go from $27 to $29.
  • One-day and 14-day unlimited ride cards will be eliminated.
  • Purchasing a new MetroCard instead of refilling an existing card will cost $1.
The hikes will go into effect Dec. 30. The changes will net the MTA an anticipated 7.5 percent in revenue.

"I would rather have expensive fares than no service," said MTA board member Susan Metzger, who voted yes for the fare hike.

Frustrated straphangers and MTA employees attacked the board at the public meeting on Thursday morning, accusing members of being oblivious to the needs of New York City commuters.

"Never have I seen the anger higher at this board of rich people who don’t even ride their own transit system," said Marty Goodman, an MTA station agent.

MTA Chairman and CEO Jay Walder defended the vote, saying the board had no other choice but to raise fares.

"I would certainly accept that some of these actions were painful for our customers and employees," Walder said.

"While we all know that the state revenues fell far short of what was projected, we here at this board and at this company have taken extraordinary measures to stick to our side of the deal and bring in 7.5 percent in revenue."

Some board members spoke out openly against the vote, including nonvoting member Andrew Albert.

"We should be rewarding our best customers for being our best customers, and instead we’re punishing them," Albert said.

Riders were furious when they heard the news.

"I think there are better ways of [balancing] the budget than than raising fares," said 20-year-old Anastasia Bana as she waited for the train in Rockfeller Center. "There's no need to buy all the new trains that we can't even use in rush hours."

"It makes me wonder if the MTA people have ever taken trains."

Even board members seemed exhausted after the vote.

On the elevator down in the MTA building, board member Patrick Foye shook his head sadly at a reporter.

"Well that was fun, wasn't it?" he said.

I hate MTA...

worst service, pay increase, PACKED AS hell..

luckly i gotta younger brother that hooks it up with that school metro..

call me what you want, but that #!%% is 80 something $ a month saved

They should of just jumped from 2.00 to 3.00 and made the monthly cards 105. This .25 cents every 3 or 4 years is annoying.

yea they keep changing %+%* down here with Atlanta's MARTA. The school/student monthly cards went from being $32 to $37 to $42 (still cheaper than yalls but its the principle of the fact). I dont even know what the regular amount is.

Then they started eliminating bus routes and changing the bus routes

Im about to be whipping by the end of the month though so f this nonsense im tired of public transportation anyway

I thought the unlimited monthly price before was extremely reasonable. I was only there for the past summer though. It was $89 right?

It still is $89, and that's not "extremely reasonable", it's extremely ridiculous as it is. When I first moved to NYC I believe the unlimited was around $65 or something like that, and that was almost 5 years ago. Nothing has changed, still the same $#^& service.

Worst part is that they're not increasing fare and increasing service..They're increasing fare and DECREASING service..Sounds pretty fair to me

It sucks but to keep it in perspective, its still about $3.50 a day to go anywhere you need.

The MTA needs to be audited to find out where the money is going. They were given over $1 billion by the federal government and they ran through it within an instant. The board at the MTA is full of it. Something is going on.

Its ridiculous. I'm already hurting paying for that monthly. And eliminating the daily is such a scumbag move.

Correct me if I'm wrong but everytime they increase the fare don't they find out that the mta has hundreds of millions of unclaimed money...

I remember when they increased the fare to $2.00 a few years ago they found out the mta was hiding like 300 million.

$104 for a monthly pass I can get a yearly pass for that amount here in Pittsburgh.

I get reimbursed from my job on monthly metrocards but if they keep raisin it I know they will cut me off

Whose surprised? this will continue to happen every two years or so as well. MTA is the biggest robbery.

MTA knows they can continually get away with fare hikes cuz by in large the subway/bus is the only mode of transportation for most residents & visitors... there really isn't much alternative because if you drive not only do you deal with congestion but low availability of parking.

Yea, I thought that was pretty reasonable considering how expensive everything else was.
