A few years ago I would have said the same thing, until I went through airport security and had completely forgotten I put a military grade knife in my luggage so that my daughter wouldn't find it.
I was shocked as hell when security pulled me aside and started giving me the treatment. Luckily they were cool enough to let me go. They kept my knife though.

And yes it was registered and he was licensed. He had reported it lost/stolen cuz he forgot about it.
Well there went at least 5 bills.

if you're used to having a gun in the vehicle all the time, it's not that hard to "forget" you have one in there when you go to a state with lame gun laws.  no need to get carried away and say the guy isn't smart enough to own a gun just because NY has some very restrictive gun laws and he happens to have one in his vehicle.
That is no excuse to forget to have a gun in a vehicle. Its things like this that have gun laws so strict in certain states....
"OMG Billy shot himself. I "forgot" to put it up in a safe place"

I'm not from NY but I know their gun laws are pretty crazy.. Best bet would be to take it apart. But, if your boys is really nervous tell him to take it apart and call the cops and let them know whats up before they Sean Bell his !$%. I'm pretty sure since he has his license and everything they'll just take the #%#$ from him and hes all good.

if you get pulled over with it tell the cops you found it and were going to turn it in...dial 911 when their lights come on so when you reach the PD they have it on record

Leave it in the trunk and make sure it is not loaded. Matter of fact keep the bullets and gun separate of each other.
