the first time i heard it i thought of

"a thug changes, and love changes, and best friends become strangers" i don't know why, i guess because it's pretty much the flip side ofthat coin. You said it well though, it was a generalization of what went on with him and Jay and I'm sure its applicable to a grip ofother people in both of their lives. I think that's why it wasn't that serious and it really wasn't a personal thing said out of malice, Nas is areal n' he knew Jay could relate with others and specifically with him.
