Is it just me or are all you guys seeing this too? Sometimes when I watch these perennial guards dish out dimes night in and night out, I feel like theirassists are tracked rather inaccurately. I know you only get the assist if you pass it to a player and they shoot it right away or if they are passing it to aplayer moving towards the basket. However, some players are credited with assists, when the shooter ends up doing most of the work to free up his own shot. It's great for fantasy leagues, but I feel the APG column is inflated and should be smoothed out to track the stats more precisely (don't know if thatis possible). I don't know why I haven't really noticed until now. And after finding about the Nick Van Exel controversy, it further solidifies mysuspicions. The steals category is pretty fishy too, please discuss.

I wouldn't say all stats are subjective and easily manipulated.

You hit a free throw, you get a point. You score a basket, you score two. You score from beyond the arc, you get three. And that's that. The only thingthat disproves the PPG category is the talent and coaching scheme around the certain player. A lot of overpaid players because of this statistic, but puttingup 20 PPG is pretty impressive.

Rebounds and blocks are pretty solid stats, just depends on line-ups sometimes (but that's all part of strategy). Even when average 10+ RPG doesn'tguarantee a massive contract.

Then there is FG%, FT%, and 3PFG% which are pretty easy to analyze.

Then there are people who over-analyze these statistics with 40 and 48 pers etc. etc. etc.

23 assists in one night, tying magic's record. but someone admitted to giving him the wrong stats

Right. I was referring to the steals and assists aspect of the game that you highlighted. Sorry for the confusion.

Don't you get an assist if you pass to a guy that takes one dribble and scores a basket, too?

Didnt Ramon Sessions get something to around that one night? I mean i know Duhon had 22 vs Golden State least season...

I am 99% sure that Scott Skiles holds the record for single assists in one game with like some # in the 30s or some ###%

Ramon Sessions got 24.

Scott Skiles holds the record for 30. Which is why he's always blackballing Ramon Sessions.

Just ask NASH what inflated assist #'s can do for you.

Hes an ALL-TIMER now after being AVERAGE, other than those run&gun PHX teams.

Well, this is what an assist is considered: If a player passes the ball to someone and they use one dribble to either shoot the ball or score, then the playerwho passed the ball gets the assist.

Now, if the player who received the pass takes more thank 1 dribble than, there is no assist granted.

Example of an assist: Center sets a high screen and and the ball handler uses the screen and pass out to the center. Center pump fakes, takes a dribble andscores.

Example of no assist: Guard is on top of the key, passes it to the wing and guard receives the pass utilizes a screen and attacks the basket to score a lay up.

I wouldn't be surprised if the APG category is inflated.

I thought you were allowed 2 dribbles.

What I want to know is MJ came back for the Wizards with a career average of 30 ppg, he averaged well under 20 ppg in two years with Wizards. How is it thathis career average is still 30ppg?

^ that's not the sort of thing you can change though. That's just because he only played 142 games those seasons - and although he scored less pointsit only dropped his overall scoring a little.

I just did some quick sums from nba.com and if you take off the Wizards games and points and divide them you get 31.5 ppg - as opposed to 30.1 with them inthere. It did drop - but not as much as if he'd played 10 seasons at that level.
