Doesn't hurt to actually back them up by doing the old school method. Burn them. Since a lot of us have DVD burners now, we can use DVD media. ITwasn't a good idea with CD-R's back then due to them not lasting because of the material the CDs were made from back then.
In the mean time, atleast you can refer back to the actual DVD disk. Its going to be a lot of DVDs though, but I usually back up the main important stuff likemy work files and family photos, etc.
I too have been paranoid about it. All HDs eventually die, so I'm just backing up everything on several hard drives.
