~NEW. Houston. TEXANS. Preseason Thread 2017~ Pats @ NRG

I appreciate Dallas holding our offseason hostage too. Straight by the nuts.

And we really don't have a choice either; just hope Rick doesn't cave.

Right? I think we know enough of how this franchise is run that nothing strategic is going on, it really is Smith and McNair being held hostage. The only way a realistic trade can work is if along with a draft pick, one of our big contracts is also shipped. The only realistic one I can think of is Cushing...

That's how I'd probably approach the draft and going forward I'd take a QB every draft til they get it right.

Article dealing with the Texans' "Seven Best Options" at QB. Wanted to not even read the rest of the article after "The Houston Texans were a complete mess at quarterback in 2016. As hard as it is to believe, they’re even worse off now than they were last season. Brock Osweiler wasn’t good, but at least he had potential". If they watched that season, they'd realize that's completely false

The Houston Texans set to cut Tony Bergstrom after one season.

In the first transaction in nearly a month, the Houston Texans are set to cut offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom after one season. The Texans signed Bergstrom to a two year deal worth $5.75 million with $1.5 million guaranteed.

Bergstrom was scheduled to have a $3.25 million cap charge with a $2.625 million salary in 2017. With the release of Bergstrom the Texans with releasing Bergstrom will create a $2.875 million net cap savings leaving only $375,000 in dead money.

Bergstrom played one offensive snap in 2016 and helped on special teams.

Bergstrom is in his 6th season in the NFL after playing at Utah. He has appeared in 40 games in his career with 4 starts.

I actually thought Bergstrom's contract was more than that, but oh well

The Houston Texans have picked up the fifth-year option of star pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney, according to ESPN Texans’ reporter Sarah Barshop.

Clowney is entering the final year of his current rookie contract, but now that his fifth-year option has been exercised, he’ll be signed through the 2018 season as well.

This was obvious

The Texans will have star-studded lineup of guest announcers for selections in this week’s NFL Draft, including two U.S. astronauts and a pair of former first-round picks.

Throughout the league, current and former players will reveal their team’s picks on Day 2. Andre Johnson, the franchise’s all-time leading receiver, two-time All-Pro, and seven-time Pro Bowler will reveal Houston’s second-round pick. Inside linebacker Brian Cushing, the team’s 2016 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee and all-time leading tackler, will announce the third-round pick in Philadelphia.

The final day of the draft kicks off with two picks from Space Center Houston. From the International Space Station, astronaut Peggy Whitson will introduce the selection. Back on Earth, retired astronaut Scott Kelly will make the live announcement from Space Center Houston, joined by TORO and the Houston Texans cheerleaders.

Whitson broke the record for cumulative time in space by a U.S. astronaut when she surpassed 535 days on April 24. Kelly, an avid Texans fan, was part of the first-ever one-year mission aboard the International Space Station which landed last March.

A Texans fan, selected by the NFL, will announce Houston’s seventh-round pick. The Texans do not have a sixth-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 2017 NFL Draft takes place Thursday, April 27 through Saturday, April 29 in Philadelphia. The Texans currently hold the following picks (overall):

Round 1: 25th
Round 2: 57th
Round 3: 89th
Round 4: 130th and 142nd (compensatory pick from Cleveland Browns)
Round 5: 169th
Round 7: 243rd

Well ****, Rick Smith gets Brock outta here, then brings in someone with actual pedigree

Watson has big potential, but I hate that I'll have super high expectation now.

I lowkey wanted OJ Howard at any cost as unrealistic as that may be/seem , but w/e. I like Watson's potential, just hope he's ready to go

This. The Texans have never truly invested in a QB, and they finally did so. The WRs are already here, your D is here for the most part, and I'm sure they'll shore up the line. 15 years in between taking a QB in the first. Crazy

So the #1 overal pick doesn't count?

Or flipping first round picks plus two second rounders?

Meant never have since Carr, and someone actually touted with legit talent. It's been a ton of Alex Brinks, Dave Ragones, Jared Zabranskys, etc. Basically been 15 years worth of meh patchwork QBs

Question as a win now team.

Watson or Jimmy G (with your first pick next year also)? Most likely to make the most immediate impact THIS season?

Boom or bust. This move either has set the team up for the next 5 years or will set us back even longer.

Considering wat they gave up they were definitely invested in Schaub, paid him twice as a matter of fact.

^Invested in Schaub, but not invested in a QB with high potential and someone who could possible be a legit franchise QB. There's a laundry list of QBs that have come through here that didn't have any of those qualities, especially ones we actually drafted.

Grading Texans’ first round pick of Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans did it. They finally traded up, and they finally drafted a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft when they took Clemson’s Deshaun Watson .

The Texans and Browns made yet another offseason trade involving a quarterback. The Texans gave up this year’s first round pick–pick 25–and next year’s first round selection to move up to number 12.

Deshaun Watson is coming off of a National Championship victory and put up great numbers at Clemson.

Watson threw for 10,163 yards, 90 touchdowns, and did so with an average completion percentage of 67.5%.

In his collegiate career, Watson continuously came up big in prime time. In his two National Championship appearances against the vaunted Alabama Crimson Tide defense, he threw for 825 yards, 7 touchdowns, and one interception.

Watson holds the first and third rankings for best quarterback performance in a bowl game since 2000 per fivethirtyeight.com.

Watson backed up his talk about a claim he made about making a championship game:

Speak your dream into existence & go get it! Never settle yourself short. I believe every1 in this world can/should be successful. It's on U pic.twitter.com/eSjoJpzIFv

The Houston Texans were aggressive and got the quarterback that was at the top of their board. As it has been reported, they fell in love with Watson during the draft process.

Yes, the Texans gave up a lot for Watson. That is what keeps me from giving them a higher grade. With all the quarterbacks going early, the team felt the need to jump the gun; and I am okay with that.

The Texans got themselves a face of the franchise quarterback, the only one in this class I believe.

Franchise quarterbacks need to be great on and off the field as leaders and players.

This trait sold general manager Rick Smith and the Texans.

As Smith said in a press conference after selecting Watson, that “He’s got that winning gene. That leadership, it’s infectious”

Deshaun Watson has the ability to start at some point during his rookie season if need be.

Watson came from a Clemson offense that is similar to the Texans’ in terms of what he’ll be asked to do.

He can make all the throws in a pro route tree, and he is mobile enough to survive some of the Texans’ offensive line woes.

Watson had some questions after placing 12th out of the quarterbacks at the combine with a 20 on his Wonderlic test. However, I do not believe he will struggle with the Texans offense as much as that one test may allude to.

When it comes to bad that comes along with Watson. He had some issues taking care of the football in college with his 32 career interceptions. That still puts his TD/Int ratio at a 2.81. This would place in the top ten among current NFL starters.

Out of all of the quarterbacks in this draft class, Watson was my favorite due to his collegiate experience coupled with his overall talent and big game expertise. He is a franchise quarterback. Here is a brief video of Watson’s off-field accomplishment:

Houston, you have a quarterback. Finally, the Texans have a quarterback to believe in. A proven winner to believe in. A champion to believe in. DeShaun Watson can take the reins of this team and bring them farther than they have ever gone.

Go Getters

After watching Andre Johnson retire earlier this month, the Texans ultimately decided they did not want to waste another tremendously talented player, such as Deandre Hopkins and J.J. Watt, because they did not have a quarterback.

Now the Texans have a quarterback they can build around.
