So... thoughts on the NFL making changes to suspend players for this? After seeing Steve and Millen/Dilfer arguing on ESPN, I figure this is going to be a hot topic for a long time. Softening the league? Or necessary change?

I've been upset w/ the direction the NFL has taken when its gotten ridiculous w/ these QB hit calls.

...I understand the liability aspect of the game, but its completely abandoned the traditional elements. May as well add flags.

I understand the sentiments behind it and I agree something needs to be done to better protect the players but there will be a lot of subjectivity with these rules.

The sad thing is Goodell and the NFL will say these rules are evidence of them being more concerned about player's safety then turn around and try to shove an 18 game regular season down their throats.

man, say what u will about ESPN, but that was a great argument.

steve's point WASNT that he agreed wit the rule but he was stating what the new rule meant. the problem is there is no definitive answer.

in the Was/Indy , Addai got hit by a legal hit (that caused a fumble) but i thought that hit was "egregious"

YET im all for the big hits, just not helmet to helmet.

Middle ground i guess. hit hard, just shoulders down...but what aabout Knees? idk

This argument is tired.

Just because we are talking contact sports doesnt mean one should be able to blatantly endanger the life of another.  The risks of football are well known but that doesn't allow for someone to go beyond what is acceptable.

Take another sport for example.  Boxer is down on one knee and gets decked by his opponent.  You would say its boxing,  but anyone with common sense would tell you that's dirty and has no place in the sport.

Yeah I think that's a pretty convenient excuse with the 18-game season coming...

A suspension for helmet to helmet should've been put in a while ago, the "devastating hit" is straight bull****.

I can't wait to see who the first guy to catch a suspension over this rule change

You want to get rid of Helmet to Helmet hits....get rid of the Helmets.

Otherwise all these rules are pointless.

Everyone loves big hits, when people get hurt all of a sudden no one likes big hits.

They just need to eliminate blatant helmet to helmet shots, lugging with the helmet, lugging at a players head and just really head hunting. The Desean Jackson hit was a bang bang type thing I think. The way Todd Heap got hit should warrant a suspension and fine.

how about we start requiring players to wear pads first? or mouthpieces that strap to the helmet in a manner so as to not let you "forget" to put it in or mold it down to nothing ... i cant stand this ... the hit on desean jackson was legal and not over the top aside from it being a bones crushing hit ... james harrison is an animal and should be suspended if he continues to head hunt like he does ... merriweather was kind of half way trying to crush heap but heap turned into it and ... ... ... you see where this is going?

you can't horse collar, you can't "hit hard," you can't touch the quarterback, you can't touch a receiver etc ... between this and the refs just calling penalties out of their %%% lately the product is falling off on the field ... it has been for a few years now and the changes Goodell is putting in place aren't helping ... but yeah let's go to 18 game seasons ...
