Giants working on $100 million contract for Eli?
The time has come for the Giants to lock up Eli Manning for life. Not like an O.J. Simpson lockup, but one that will assure he will not take a snap for another NFL team before he retires. And if one rumor is true, that may be happening very soon, at leastbefore the end of the season.
The rumor is the Giants and Manning's people are working on an extension that would make the quarterback a millionaire more than 100 times over, andbasically cover the rest of his football career. The deal reportedly will surpass the seven-year, $99.2 million contract brother Peyton signed with the Coltsin 2004. That deal included a $34.5 million signing bonus.
Giants general manager Jerry Reese never comments on contract negotiations, and was not about to change his stance on this one. And it's easier to get acall back from Osama bin Laden than from Tom Condon, Manning's representative.
So while this remains only a rumor for the time being, it certainly makes sense on both ends. Manning's current deal is scheduled to expire after the2009 season, and there is no way the Giants want him to get anywhere near free agency.
