They ended up way different from the sample I saw. The sample pair was all teal with teal m logo.

I think it depends on the player. They don't do that with all the players. I think it's based on the players ideas and what they want to do. Jurassic Park might be Ja's favorite movie. Paul George might like to fish and the outdoors and they incorporate it.
It's not silly at all. If it's my signature sneaker I might want it to mean more than just a color.

Like the Ja's you mentioned
But not every colorway needs a story. Some of them just sound silly. Especially when they just slap it on a uninteresting/lazy colorway
