I know a lot of you all are going to college and have a vision of the direction you want your life to take, but what if (God forbid) things don't pan out the way you want them to? What's your fall back plan?

I personally want to go to law school after undergrad and practice corporate law afterward. But I was talking to my adviser and reading a few article online a while back and according to them, the law field is dying since it's overly saturated. What with 40,000 people nationwide obtaining law degrees and the economy being as uncertain as it's been for the past few year, it's a dying profession for those who don't go to the top tier schools. This realization has me busting my @@@ trying to get these good grades. But when I was in high school, i learned that it's always good to play it safe and have a fall back plan. Mines is to get commissioned in the air force and serve for a few years. Plus I heard the service pays your student loans (which would be fanfreakingtastic). Then I'll have a military back ground as well as a doctorate degree with no debt. What about you all?

I'm taking plan B right now.

Air Force.

It will allow me to be more focused and disciplined by eliminating the distractions that I constantly have around me right now, plus allowing me to travel and get those benefits. I'm happy about my choices.

If I don't get into dental or optometry school, then I will go to grad school. If even that is not an option, looks like I would be looking at a future of being a lab tech or some other entry level molecular bio job

Not really. I'm in law school, plan on being a lawyer. I could always fall back on my business degree, but I have absolutely no intentions of doing so. I plan on slaving away at school so I can get on at the firm I work at, now, and do corporate law until I'm comfortable enough to retire.

I feel like if I put too much thought into Plan B then I'm going to get lazy on my Plan A because I know I have a simpler option.

Makes sense. What do you think of the field in the current state it's in now? And what do you do at that firm?

As far as I know, the service doesn't help out officers with school debt (at least the navy doesn't, and I think the same with the army) because officer pay is a lot higher then enlisted. you get many more benefits as a result of being an officer then enlisted. They wouldnt pay your loans but you would have access to the GI bill, but you have to obtain whatever degree within 36 months from when you start classes. You would have to really accelerate that phd program in order to not pay out of pocket.

I know because your plan B is my plan A. I am trying to obtain a commission as a Naval officer and I'm in a ton of debt from undergrad and that was one of my first questions. After I was told no, I was like I still want to do this really bad because of the invaluable experiences. My plan B is to just keep on with my current job and try to go back to school for a MPP. My current company offers tuition assistance but its not much unless I got into the state school, UMD (still a great program, top 20 PP program). I mean I know that my position is not 100% guaranteed at my current spot but I know to bust my %++ no matter what I do.
