I use a program called Auto GK now for ripping DVDs to avi.

When trying to figure out the file size, generally 9-10 megs a minute looks awesome (almost DVD quality) with this program.

Here's an old guide I wrote that I just found:

"DVD to .avi Guide"

Tools needed:

Auto GK - http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=AutoGK

DVDShrink - http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Shrink


Directions:

1. First use DVD Shrink to rip the match you want to your harddrive.

2. This Guide will help you with that: http://www.dvdshrink.info/re-author-advanced.php

3. Then install Auto GK.

4. Open up the .vob file that DVDshrink ripped to your hard drive in Auto GK.

5. And follow this guide: http://www.rita.lt/guides/AutoGK_MPEG2toAVI.htm to save it as either a divx or xvid. The guide is the same except you will be using the .vob file instead of a .mpeg.
