...why is that Jay Z essentials thread 3 years old? what happened? did we just give up on making essential threads or something?

...its like a great idea stopped before it got really good.

I hear you...but I always felt like.... the idea could have been even bigger. And I've thought of a way to give it life. We should do an essentials thread on rap itself...like....as an art form and a craft. The genre is very broad right now and it would be cool to jump off a wiki or something about hip hop. It could contain sun-genres like...IDK... hip-POP, TRIP-hop, TRAP-hop, SWAG-hop....whatever.. just snowballing here. I've ran this idea around in my head a few times but I'm too lazy to actually jump it off. There are several components to rhyming and song writing and an in-depth wiki about it would be cool...

But anyway, I'd love to go through a Biggie Essentials thread ftr..

Yeah that thread and the others were dope.

Wonder if an all-around essentials thread would work. Like, regarding albums, not just singles; that'd get too messy.

the music forum is in definite need of some house cleaning
unlike other sections where there seems to be a an administrative presence

actively involved in what's going on there.  Instead the music gets raided

harshly every once in a while with seems like un-just punishments...

....NT Music has always been like the back alley of Niketalk. i guess this is no exception. oh well.

....preciate the positive responses versus the usual childish banter you get around here.

The people attempted got one going for Nasir a few years back but without the coveted sticky it eventually just disappeared into the abyss.
As dude above said, you do need an administrative presence for that kind of thing. The old NT Essentials used to work because Ant was around stickying them at the top of the page, linking too previous threads, etc but he's retired now or something.

Instead here we are in 2012 and I'd bet the majority of posters who frequent this section today don't even remember the old essentials list.

It's a pretty sweet idea. The number one best thing about the old essentials threads was the conversation and discussion that got going as everyone's different preferences were laid out on the table.
If we broke it down to a few different sub-categories of rap music and did essentials for each one like you said,

at the some of the discussion we could get going.

Let's do it... Here's the mission statement of TV tropes.org... I'm posting it for relevance but the bolded parts are THE MOST important thing to remember when we undertake this thing. Sub out fiction with "Hip-hop" and this is the gist of the idea I was having.

What is this about? This wiki is a catalog of the tricks of the trade for writing fiction.
Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.
The wiki is called "TV Tropes" because TV is where we started. Over the course of a few years, our scope has crept out to include other media. Tropes transcend television. They reflect life. Since a lot of art, especially the popular arts, does its best to reflect life, tropes are likely to show up everywhere.
We are not a stuffy encyclopedic wiki. We're a buttload more informal. We encourage breezy language and original thought. There Is No Such Thing As Notability, and no citations are needed. If your entry cannot gather any evidence by the Wiki Magic, it will just wither and die. Until then, though, it will be available through the Main Tropes Index.
We are also not a wiki for bashing things. Once again, we're about celebrating fiction, not showing off how snide and sarcastic we can be.
Enough about what we are not. Go on, have a look at the welcome page, and have fun!

I feel that the emphasis placed on being informative without being snide is the key factor.
