This is very true, there is a reason its cheaper to get them pulled...  Your teeth are always moving and one of the things keeping them in place is the fact that other teeth are there.  Yank one and the whole mouth is going to change over time: shifting, rotating, and extra spaces... 
 
i had to get both when I busted some teeth in a golf kart accident

You should try and save it. If you extract it, the tooth opposing it may supra erupt and cause problems with your occlusion later on.
