How I discovered Jazz:

Find an artist/album you like and study the liner notes. Check out every ensemble your favorite artist has played with, every artist in the ensemble on your favorite record. You'll learn what you like, etc.

Song artits to check out OP...

The Dave Bruebeck Quartet
George Benson
Al Jarreu
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Grant Green
Ahmad Jamal Trio
Madlib (seriously)
Dizzy Gillespie
Count Bassie
Billie Holliday
Duke Ellington
Earl Hines
Herbie Hancock

My suggestion would be to start with Kind of Blue. It features some of the greats. Miles in his Prime, a young Coltrane, Mr. P.C, Cannonball and so on.

Move to A Love Supreme Suite. Features the Coltrane Classic Quartet. Hands down the best Jazz Quartet of all time.

But.. Another route would be to start with some earlier artists as mentioned by some other people.

i.e. Duke, Bird, Dizz, Monk.......and the list goes on. Good post.

^Word Sinner!
That Blue Note comp single handedly kicked off my obsession with finding Blue Note records from the late 60's to early 70's (which is no easy task!).
