So i'm watching all of this Free Agency stuff on ESPNNews, and what i'm having trouble understanding is this Chris Bosh deal.

"Sign And Trade"

From what i've read and seen, he's not going to stay in Toronto, right?

So, What is the point in a sign and trade from the Raptors to Cleveland?

Why would you do that instead of going to the team directly?

Cannot compute.

Someone help clarify this for me, thanks.

The Raptors can offer him the most money. Thats why.

So...

They can offer him the most money, and therefore trade him to another squad, even if it'd put the team he's being shipped to over the Salary Cap?

Pretty much finances, as only the Raptors can give Bosh the full max (approx 6yrs/119 million. With a S&T not only does Bosh get all the money, but he gets to go to the team of his choice, while the Raptors get back a combination of players and/or draft picks, rather than letting him leave and get nothing in return.

Cleveland wouldn't be able to acquire Chris Bosh because of their salary being over the threshold, thus a sign and trade would be needed. A team cannot sign another player unless they use one of their exceptions, or do a sign and trade. The most of an exception that the Cavaliers could use is a MLE (mid-level exception), but that's not nearly enough for Bosh.

Chris Bosh could sign as much as he wants from Toronto (max deal), and then Cleveland would send as much contracts needed to almost match that contract in which Bosh would receive (it can go about a 200k difference I believe).

Bosh could only get more money from Toronto since that's the team he was at last year, and he also gets an extra year on his contract if he wants it, and then Cleveland would have to match that salary by trading pieces to Toronto.

S+T's usually involve picks, young talent, and expirings.

He can make more money in a sign and trade versus just straight up signing with a team. Also, Raptors get something in return instead of losing him for nothing.

It shows how much Bosh really cares about the team. Hes all for himself.

He wants to play at only the 4, and wants that cash, because no team is willingly to give him the max.

Why would you want to go to a team where, they would have no pieces after giving up half the team for you?

Bosh is interested in doing a S&T because it will allow him to get more $$/more years on his contract. TOR owns Bosh's "bird rights" and can offer him a 6 year contract, while other teams can only offer 5 years. Further, the Raptors can offer him annual raises of around 10% ( i believe), compared to the 8% he can be offered from other teams. Combine the contract/years, and Bosh can make around $30 million dollars more staying in TOR. This is purposely built into the salary cap to encourage stars to stay with their home teams.

Like you said, he wants out of TOR. A S&T allows him to get the maximum contract he can possibly get AND still change teams. It benefits TOR in that they can get assets from the team Bosh wants to sign with and they don't end up losing him for nothing.

If it was a team like MIA or CHI that had cap space to straight up sign him, those teams would probably prefer to not do a S&T. However, CLE is not under the cap, so their only way of obtaining Bosh would be through a S&T (where they send comparable salary back to TOR to clear space for Bosh's contract). In this situation, all three parties would benefit from the S&T.

Hope that makes sense.

EDIT: Sorry for the repetitiveness, Yuku showed 0 posts two minutes ago...

Say there was a salary cap in baseball.
Since matt kemp got drafted by the dodgers, they can offer more money to him than any other team.
Dodgers can offer 10 mil a year. Any other team can only offer him 6 mil max (due to the salary cap/league rules)
Kemp doesn't wanna play for the dodgers. Instead of just letting him walk away, they're gonna sign him to the max deal of 10 mil per year, then trade him to the yankees for players/prospects. Since he technically "signed" with the dodgers, he received the max money possible. More than any other team can possibly offer him. It could be a win/win situation for both teams

just basically so the team (Cavs) gets rid of some salaries and the team ( raptors) will get some quality players back..
