Official 2017 Knicks Offseason thread, Phil Jackson gone

I mean as long as you suck and keep your draft picks, it shouldn't be that hard to build a competitive team in NY with an all-star player already in hand.

Knicks need to just accept they will probably suck for the next five years and just do their best to maximize their draft picks. Its pretty simple.

Rose is an expiring contract.
Plenty teams would accept Melo if a trade was to be explored, in exchange for youth and picks.
Everyone else have great contracts to trade with, our only difficult piece to move would be Noah

its true though even during the zeke/marbury era we would make a great comback just to lose in the end.... its like why do we have to lose the whole game then all of a sudden compete in the end for a comeback? why not just play with effort the whole game

Still blows my mind we've kept this up through different regimes for the greater part of two decades. Has to be one of the most odd things in sports.

We were on the right track last season.

Improved from 17 to 32 wins. Signed an above average center (who's also a good fit next to our 2 best players) to an affordable contract. Signed a fine backup big for $4M a year. Took calculated risks signing Afflalo & DWill to 1 year deals. I get why Phil traded for Rose but even with him we're not close to a championship. No need to break up a team that was showing signs of life.

I really wanted us to keep building on that team instead of bringing in a whole new squad for what feels like the 5th time since Melo's been here. The first step towards winning is continuity. There's no way to establish a winning culture if there's 8-10 new guys every season.

to be 100% honest, Phil is only to blame for one ON THE COURT blunder and that would be signing Noah for that ridiculous contract. he's not to blame for the lack of defense, regardless if his boy Rambis is our "defensive specialist". guys are just not playing with enough heart.

Phil actually did something good by getting Hornacek instead of keeping Rambis as HC. he also traded for Rose to appease Melo, bc IIRC he said something about the team needing a PG. please correct me if i'm wrong.

however, Phil's inability to keep his mouth shut and publicly criticizing his players is extremely unprofessional. it is causing a distraction, but again, has absolutely nothing to do with how bad our defense is. Billy and Kuz also got really really good contracts, so kudos for that too. we wouldn't even have to be in full "rebuild" mode if it wasn't for Noah :smh:

the current salary cap is just over 94 mil. if Noah isnt on the books, then we would have about 35 mil to spend this offseason. thats not even taking into account the cap going up. we wouldnt even need to sign max guys to be good. holiday, baker, willy, kuz, KP, Melo, and KOQ is already a good base considering how much money we have. dump lee and lance and we have another 18 mil to spend. im not even mad at lee's contract or him being on the team really.

if we could redo the offseason, i would rather have kept lopez or traded him and grant for teague. dont mind the lee signing. we didnt know lance would regress so dramatically, but his contract isnt atrocious. hes making like 6 mil.

It's team defense that is our biggest issue. These guys can play defense. But as soon as their man gets by them, the rotations/effort/help defense is all absolutely garbage.

Calling something a skill doesn't mean it's hard to learn.

Skills are just learned abilities. Its not like talent where it's completely innate.

Thing is to learn a skill, especially defensive skills, you have to be focused and dedicated. It also helps if you learn them when you're younger, you know when you're more athletic and have the energy.
It's pretty clear Phil inherited players he didn't want and the is working on addressing that while he builds the team he builds he wants.

This becomes clearer and easy to do when an aging Melo, young KP, and Phil running things isn't enough to attract free agents to make the team better. No way Phil was creating a team that could win it all before Melo's contract expires/retirement. All he did was manage to unload some of the trash that was here while bringing in some of his own.
Lol so he basically traded trash for different trash instead of building up what we had because of his personal preferences

His job isn't to be a b-ball snob to the media it's to building a winning team. He hasnt done his job bottom line dude just wants to be heard and get attention.
Well the main trash Phil brought in my eyes is Noah's contract. He got rid of Bargs, Caldo, etc. He did a lot in that dept. Unfortunately he had to get of other young promising players like Hardaway Jr.

Guys like Sasha and Lance are easily dismissed. Rambis can be fired at any time and it won't hurt the cap.

We got KP, Holiday looks good, so does Kuz and Baker, then Hernangomez and whoever else I'm forgetting. Those are players to grow for the future or that can become good trade value. Given Melo here, Phil got Rose for a year, Lee on a good contract, hired Horny all to make us good enough to be a playoff team which we should be If we tried but that doesn't mean the squad is good or doesn't suck.

Phil did that just so it wouldn't look like he was purposely tanking for the draft (and wasting Melo's time after his contract and w/e he told him about the team's immediate future/plans). Mind you this is after one player wouldn't sit down with him and Phil wasn't all that interested in many other FAs cuz he ain't looking to give out multiple big contracts to tie our hands in future offseasons

It feels like Phil wants to semi-rebuild around KP. Since Melo is here though he doesn't mind if the team ends up in the playoffs which gives Melo the chance to lead them as far as he can take them. Also given the way Phil is moving it's why I don't think he's getting fired and will most likely get an extension where he outlasts Melo or outlasts Melo where he's considered the best player/#1 option.

I don't pay mind to Phil's relationship with the media. Nor do I believe he came here just to get attention and be heard  He could've stayed in LA, waited for Kobe to retire and fit in with the Buss fam and get attention there.

It's literally been 3 years since he got here though.

Coach all on the floor caught my attention last night, but I wouldn't expect them to make that call. But your man was inside the three point line if I remember correctly.

When you step on the court when ball is live and you're not a player or a ref, that should be grounds for ejection, a fine and a suspension

A rebuild would be great. We have needed one for 17 years. Knicks just don't have the patience to do it right.
Maybe we will be patient for 1 or 2 years, but its never enough.
We always make win now moves that set us back.
Hopefully something happens, but I would not expect much to change with Dolan in charge...

Somebody explain what Walsh was doing.

I assume you mean rebuild through the draft. That's a proposal that could take up to 7 years before it bears any fruit.

Dolan won't be down for that besides from Layden to Thomas too many picks were traded back then. Now we're in a bit better position but the East is still weak. Dolan is not going to accept that we can't have a playoff and possible championship caliber team that we can form through trades and free agency.

He'll just keep firing coaches, GMs, and Presidents of operations. I don't ever see him doing that unless it happens quickly similar to how long he was willing to wait for Walsh's "plan".

We were so close to a true rebuild up until this summer. Then Phil pushed the panic button to try to appease our fanbase.

I want to believe Melo is up to something about not waiving his trade clause,

I want to believe Melo will convince CP to come to NY

I want to believe Melo, Phil and the Knicks are just messing with us fans OD because they got something this summer.

There's only 2 free agents I wanna go all out on this summer. Gordon and CP3

We have no chance at either
