Sixers set to meet today with Hawks free agent Josh Smith
JOSH SMITH, the argument goes, is not a pure NBA low-post player.
But the 6-9 Atlanta Hawks restricted free agent is:
* The league's No. 2 shot-blocker the last two seasons, each time finishing behind the Denver Nuggets' Marcus Camby.
* The first player to block at least 225 shots and hit at least 25 three-pointers in the same season; he has had at least 200 blocks and 25 triples in three straight seasons.
* The third player in history to average at least 17.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals in a season. The others are Hall of Famers David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon.
Smith's remarkable fourth season included averages of 17.2 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals. Coming out of Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. in 2004, he originally committed to Indiana University before becoming the No. 17 pick in the 2004 draft.
And he won't turn 23 until December.
All that is why the 76ers, who have about $11.5 million in salary-cap space available, have invited Smith and his representatives to visit today. He and agents Brian **** and Wallace Prowther visited yesterday with the Hawks and newly minted general manager Rick Sund, who has said repeatedly that ownership plans to match any offers made to Smith and his restricted free-agent teammate, Josh Childress, the No. 6 overall pick in '04.
Childress, 25, a 6-8 forward who came off the bench in 76 games last season, is scheduled to meet with the Sixers later this week. Childress is being considered for the Sixers' need at small forward. His fourth season was the first in which he was used exclusively as a reserve.
If the Sixers were to use the entire $11.5 million toward a contract for Smith, using the maximum permissible annual raises of 8 percent from the base year, they could offer a 5-year deal worth $66.7 million. Smith turned down an in-season offer of an extension worth about $45 million, also for 5 years.
(An aside: A distant rumor yesterday suggested that the Sixers were trying to clear additional space to increase an offer to whoever the final target turns out to be.)
President/general manager Eddie Stefanski has said it probably would take all of the cap space to add an impact player, whether in free agency or in trade. He is expected to continue exploring the availability of forward Elton Brand, who opted out of his $16.44 million final season with the Los Angeles Clippers; indications have been that Brand prefers to remain with the Clippers, but is looking for a 6-year package worth more than $100 million

Hawks' Smith 'impressed' by visit with Sixers
Philly going after both of Atlanta's free-agent Joshes
By SEKOU SMITH

The Philadelphia 76ers rolled out the red carpet for Hawks forward Josh Smith on Wednesday, complete with limousine rides, a guided tour of not only their facilities but much of the city of Brotherly Love and a brief meeting with Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.
"We had a great meeting and a great time visiting with everyone here [Wednesday], and we'll continue to talk tomorrow," Brian ****, one of Smith's agents, said late Wednesday night. "What I can tell you is that we're very impressed with 76ers organization and the city of the Philadelphia."
**** and Wallace Prather, Smith's other agent, had a lunch meeting with the Hawks on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith's highly anticipated visit to Philadelphia, on the second day NBA free agents could be wooed by other teams, is just the first for the Hawks' two Joshes.
Fellow free agent Josh Childress, whose representatives are scheduled to meet with the Hawks in Washington this week, is expected in Philadelphia for a Monday visit.
His Washington-based agent, Jim Tanner, said the interest in his client has grown steadily since the start of free agency Tuesday.
"We're extremely pleased with the broad and enthusiastic interest in Josh from a number of teams around the league," Tanner said, declining to name any of the teams or the number of teams. "We're in the process of setting up meetings in several places. But I don't think it's any secret that Josh wants to find the best fit, be it in Atlanta or elsewhere."
The 76ers, armed with more than $11 million in available cap space, are making a play for both Joshes. They could force the Hawks to match an offer for one of them, leaving the other vulnerable to their advances.
If the 76ers use the entire $11-plus million on a contract for Smith, factoring in the allowable 8 percent raise from the base-year salary, they could offer him a five-year deal worth about $67 million.
That's $22 million more than the $45 million the Hawks offered - and Smith turned down - in October, when they had a chance to keep both Smith and Childress in Hawks uniforms with five-year extensions.
A front-loaded offer for Smith, similar to the contract the Hawks offered Joe Johnson three years ago in an effort to snatch him from Phoenix, could further complicate matters for the Hawks.
Childress could command a deal starting at the projected mid-level exception salary of about $5.6 million. That would mean over five years the deal would pay him more than $34 million with the maximum allowable pay raise of 8 percent.
Childress finished sixth in the voting for the NBA's Sixth Man Award this season. Much like Smith, who finished sixth in the voting for the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award, Childress has a unique blend of skills that are in high demand this summer.
Childress saw his playing time dip this season by seven minutes, from 36.9 to 29.9 a night, and still averaged 11.1 points on 57 percent shooting.
He was one of just six players in the league to average at least 10 points and 4 rebounds while also shooting better than 50 percent (.571) and making 20 or more 3-pointers. Shawn Marion, Lamar Odom, Mike Miller, Grant Hill and Andre Kirilenko were the others.
Tanner said Childress is looking for a fit similar to the one he's had with the Hawks, who selected him with the sixth pick in the 2004 draft.
"He wants to play with other good players in a good situation and he wants to win," Tanner said.

The Miami Heat may have surprised the nation by taking and keeping Michael Beasley with the second overall pick in the NBA draft, but it's no surprise at all to learn that they're now working hard to try and acquire a point guard. Dwyane Wade was lobbying hard for OJ Mayo, who was ultimately the third pick and landed in Memphis via trade, but the Heat opted to go with the player they thought was the best available instead of drafting for need.
It seems more and more likely that the Heat are going to have to trade Shawn Marion to get the playmaker they need, likely to be Chicago's Kirk Hinrich, Philly Andre Miller, or perhaps Golden State's Monta Ellis, though Ellis is not a point guard by nature. The problem for the Heat is that if they send Marion to a conference rival they could wind up trading themselves right out of the playoffs. The Bulls are still probably one piece away from being a serious postseason threat, and Marion would absolutely make them a force to be reckoned with. But Hinrich is also the most likely to be available because Derrick Rose is assumed to be the new starter in Chi-Town.
One way or the other, we haven't heard the last of the Heat in this summer's trade rumors. They need another deal to get their rotation in order, and there's no reason Beasley can't step in at the three if Marion steps out.

In the face of a longstanding leaguewide consensus that Brand would return to Hollywood to form a new partnership with Clipper-to-be Baron Davis, sources say that the Sixers are growing increasingly confident in their ability to create additional salary-cap space by trading away swingman Rodney Carney and center Calvin Booth, setting them up to make a sufficiently rich offer Brand would struggle to refuse.
Dealing away Carney and Booth -- with Minnesota and Memphis quickly emerging as possible destinations -- would shed nearly $3 million from the Sixers' payroll next season as long as the trade doesn't require new GM Ed Stefanski to take any salary back.
Multiple front-office sources said late Monday that the Sixers are closing in on a deal with the Timberwolves in which the Wolves would absorb the contracts of both Carney and Booth by using the $2.8 million remaining from a trade exception created by Minnesota's trade of Mark Blount to Miami last October and a separate minimum player exception. It was not immediately known what financial and/or draft considerations might be included in the trade from either side.

the sixers stay taking L's
no one in there right mind would want to play for the sixers, they should get comfortable having the worst record in the league for the next 20 years
they already dig the hole when they forced Iverson out by not building a good team around him and now they want to go all out this seasoncause no 1 is showing up to the whack games

Philadelphia just got a lot bigger.
The 76ers and coveted Clippers free agent big man Elton Brand have reached a verbal agreement for a multi-year contract, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
The report, citing an NBA source who requested anonymity, says the deal is believed to be for five years and in the $80-million range.
Brand, a two-time All Star with L.A., opted out of the final year of his deal with the Clippers last week.
The move must come as a shocker to new Clippers PG Baron Davis, who agreed to sign a five-year, $65 million deal with L.A. last week, with expectations of returning to his hometown to pair up with Brand.
In nine NBA season with the Bulls and Clippers, Brand has averaged 19.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.
