What was it like when the Space Jams first dropped in 2000?

Was there a ton of hype/chaos ?

Did you have to line up the day before?
I was in 11th grade at the time, back then Jordan's would release on weekdays. My parents allowed me to go to school late so I could buy them. There was definitely people lined up but it wasn't crazy. I put them on feet the same day and went to school

I was a junior in high school. They release on a wednesday. You had to know because the internet as it is now really didn’t say.

Mall went in to utter crap mode. It was beyond chaos.

Nah... people had them but there was so much other stuff that they were just another pair of dope shoes to choose from.

The hype was there but it wasn't the end of the world if you didn't have them...

Hell no people weren't lining up the day before. People might have left school early to cop or show up a couple hours before the store opened specifically (Niketown) in NYC.

Where y'all from cuz Atlanta went nuts over these. And there really wasn’t a ton available at the time as alternatives.

I do remember the concords and columbias sitting though.

SJ's generated a lot of hype but it wasn't wild pandemonium .. CG XI's had the city upside down though.

This is the accurate take. YMMV on SJ but CGs generated an unreal amount of hype. Retro+ wasn’t really a thing prior to CGs also

Gammas ain’t better than the SJ’s but I can be talked into it being better than the Breds….

Breds the weakest of the OG colorways
Wrong. Only the Concords can compete, and even that is 50-50. Playoff 11’s are not only the GOAT 11 imo, but the GOAT Jordan period. Gammas are trash and not even in the conversation.

BTW, the Bred 11 was the first “new” Jordan to be a day 1 sellout almost everywhere - a good 4 years before the retro craze. Most of you youngins have no idea. No other Jordan before the Bred 11 in 96’ sold as fast. Not BC4’s, not Infareds, not even the Concords. You had to be there to see the impact. EVERYONE and their momma wanted these. I saw it all in real time, and I got the last size 11 at a place called Sneakerland in Woodland Hills CA.

And all of this without collaboration hype, resell bs, and all the other shenanigans we see today. They sold out not cause of hype, but cause the shoe was DOPER than words that can be mustered. Sure, MJ’s return and the Bulls dominance helped, but again, no other “new” Jordan in the 90’s sold out day 1 like this. I never wanted a shoe so bad, ever.

I had the Concords already but black/red J’s were always my favorite, and when I saw these my jaw fell to the floor. That bright red sole, that sharp white lining on the patent, with the aggressive black mesh upper, that sleek toebox. You couldn’t tell my 18 year old self NOTHING. And you still can’t, at age 47.

This is the goat sneaker, and I WILL DIE ON THAT HILL - DO NOT fight me on this. You WILL lose, I promise.

I miss those days of having these on my feet, with Tupac’s “All Eyez on Me” in my Walkman in English class. What a time.

White socks with that fit is diabolical.

Dope inspiration though

The white socks ain’t it sir.

That's the socks that Iverson wore when he played in college, so I just emulated his look with the white ankle socks.

The Space Jam XI wasn't hard to get and there weren't any chaotic situations with that release. You didn't have to camp out. Peeps just went to the stores that had them that morning to get in line. Anyone who wanted them could have gotten them if they set out for them that morning.

Jordan 11 Gammas > Jordan 11 Space Jams > 11 Breds

What the helly?

I do agree with Space Jams > Breds though

Im also not the biggest bred 11 guy. I think the people that lived through the 90s Bulls era are bigger fans of that colorway then everyone else tbh.

As far as the XI goes, I only compare and contrast the three colors that were available for fans during the 1995-96 NBA season. The Black/Red is my favorite one from that time. And it's the only color I got during that season back in April 1996. The Concord is second best color from that season. The Columbia is my least favorite just because they weren't as visible as the Black/Red and Concord predicated on Jordan wearing them only one time that season, specifically in the 1996 NBA All-Star Game.

I'm going to admit I actually thought the Concord was ugly back then! But I changed my mind by 2001 and accepted them as a classic Jordan.

The Columbia was bland to me with them being predominantly white with touches of sky blue on the Jumpman logo on the sides and the outsole.

I'm surprised Jordan didn't wear a Space Jam XI revised with the 23 on the back during that season.

We just got the legend blue lows like 3-4 summers ago

I missed out on em... This is definitely welcome news to me

We good on the legend blue colorblocking considering we already got them for Xmas

Better be these with a better shape

I doubt the pending White/University Blue/Black will be a rehash of the Legend Blue XI Low that came out in 2021 because it will be 5 years apart, especially since it's not an original or a legitimate classic.

Perhaps it could be the University Blue XI Low that originally came out in 2001 and was rehashed in 2017.

But I have a feeling these will be a tweaked version of a white and sky blue XI Low with either the material or color placements as the tweaks.

Thats why I said most people that hold up the Bred 11 or Jordan 11 are people who lived through the times. Like you said Tinker, the Bulls, MJ, and the NBA was all at its peak and it was a shoe that was ahead of its time. My older cousin describes the first time he saw MJ in the concords on TV and its a similar story. But you guys lived through it. Anybody younger than 30 wont have the same sentimental value to the colorway. The bred 11 is the ultimate Chicago bulls jordan imo

I still remember the chaos of trying to get these. My mom drove me to the mall as usual to get them, I walked into Footlocker and asked for my size and the guy was like “ we are sold out of all men’s sizes”. At first, I thought he was joking. J’s back then didn’t sell out like that, even the Concords took at least a few weeks to dry up in most places. Never before had there been an issue copping a pair of the latest Jordans for me. But he was dead serious - he said there had been a line that morning 😮

So we walk to Champs, same thing. We drive to another mall, sold out at ALL 3 stores there. At this point I’m like wtf?? So my mom starts calling places to see if there are any left. I can’t remember how many places she called, but it was a few. All were either entirely sold out, or had only really small or huge sizes. We finally called Sneakerland, they said they had ONE size 11 left, and my mom begged them to hold them for a few minutes. It was only like a 5 minute drive from where we were, but I’ll be damned if that wasn’t the longest 5 minute drive of my life. We get there, and my mom tells the dude we just called about the new Jordans, you guys have one size 11 left right? He goes in the back and brings them out. He said, we have been getting calls about these all day, I’ve never seen a sneaker this popular before. I walked out the happiest kid on the planet I tell ya. On top of absolutely loving the shoe, it was my 18th birthday present, April 96’.

Anyone who had these on feet at school the next day, broke more necks than the Hillside Strangler. Today’s kids don’t got stories like this.

Man i love personal stories like this! This is what NT is about. I wish I was there man. Im probably the biggest MJ fan aged 30 and under and I wish I could of experienced more. But my pops being a huge MJ fan i definitely felt most of it. I actually had the OG 1995 pair of concords in infants lmaoo.

I feel like that release really changed my perspective going forward. I had a sense that we were entering a new era, and when it came time for the 12’s to drop, I was there bright and early for the Taxi’s. There was a short line, but I copped with no issue. I can’t remember if those were a day 1 sellout, but I definitely didn’t see them everywhere like I did the 11’s, at least not at first. I think the Bred 11 pointed to what was to come just a few short years later with the introduction of the retro era (1994 retros not withstanding, people weren’t ready yet) and sneaker culture becoming more global and widespread.

To me one of the X factors in putting the Concords and Space Jams over the Breds is they're both more versatile/wearable

The Breds are bold, the Jams are understated
