The Twins will defend their AL Central title with a starting five of Carl Pavano, Francisco Liriano, Nick Blackburn, Brian Duensing and Scott Baker.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire announced before today's game against Florida that righthander Kevin Slowey will open the season in the bullpen, which set the rotation.

Slowey has been told of the decision, and told pitching coach Rick Anderson that he's willing to do whatever is needed of him to help the team win.

.... I feel like Bedard has a good year ahead of him. Reports out of camp are extra-positive.

Pavano didn't pitch so well, but oh well. Tolbert made 25-man roster.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Carl Pavano had his worst start of spring training against his former team, giving up five runs and 11 hits in six innings but the Minnesota Twins beat the New York Yankees 7-6 on Sunday.

Pavano, slated to start on opening day for the Twins, took a 0.95 ERA into Sunday's game. He gave up a solo homer to Robinson Cano in the first inning. Four of the runs against Pavano were earned.

Twins right fielder Michael Cuddyer hit a solo shot. Twins utility player Matt Tolbert, who learned Sunday he would make the 25-man roster, had a hit and two RBIs.

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira went 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Alex Rodriguez was 0 for 2, lowering his spring average to .404.
