I honestly just wanted to see how "up-to-date" it was.

My pops helped me with the build about two years ago.

well by next month your cpu will be 2 generations old and your gpu one but if you can play everything you want at the settings you find acceptable & run everything you need to run then its up to date enough.
although if you dont have an ssd i'd highly suggest getting one.

I was looking at SSDs, but I really didn't want to deal with transferring over data from my HD. I think my HD is good for now.

Other than that I wouldn't worry about upgrading until next year.

Computer keeps overheating then shutting off.. The fan is barely working, (works fine when the computer is on it's side) what's the problem with this? Need your help. Thinking about switching off to an Apple computer..

Using an SSD without regularly backuping your data is asking for trouble. Great performance but reliability is hit or miss.

If you don't mind a little spending: Get better fans
If you have the money: Get a better case



To the guy holding off SSDs... you're definitely missing out. Lol. Just need the prices to drop a bit more before I consider purchasing a larger-capacity one. 128GB just isn't going to cut it. Still use a conventional hard drive for most of my data, though.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop for everyday use. My budget is between $350 and $500. I've read reviews about the ASUS K55N and it looks like an excellent laptop for me. Does anyone have that laptop or an ASUS computer?

Well, have the fan / interior of your notebook cleaned - canned air, q-tips, and a soft brush should come in handy. Just make sure you don't void your warranty (if any).

For usage, ideally use the device on top of a smooth and flat surface - keep the vents clear of any obstructions.
Refrain from using it on soft / uneven surfaces (like on top of a bed). It blocks the airflow to the cooling vents on the bottom of the device. Contrary to its colloquial namesake, it still works best on top of a desk.

Get a laptop cooler. If you're not keen on those, get something that sticks to the feet of your laptop to raise it about an inch or so, so that more air can circulate around the bottom -would definitely help the cooling.

Try to prevent your laptop from overheating too often. It might lead to some components of your motherboard being damaged.

You did mention the fan working well when it's on its side, though... Fan might be starting to show some wear. Have it replaced if you can.

On SSDs, the improved boot time alone makes it worth it to me.

You'll need a case but i dont know if you want to spend the money for a pretty htpc case or just get a cheap $20 regular tower case and call it a day. You'll also need a copy of windows(which will cost) or which ever operating system you plan on using.

as long as you have a connection then yeah. HTPC is the same as any regular PC, just built with the main focus of home theater (obviously)

In regards to the tower, just make sure it will hold a micro atx motherboard if you're going with the one he selected. Also make sure the airflow will be adequate.

You'll be able to stream media and web surf along with everything else except gaming, video converting (you could but it would probably take forever) and video editing(also would probably take a long time)

Like Wes said, you'll need a case that supports a microATX board.
You could try something like this:

Or search for something smaller although you'll have less room to work with when installing & space for air to flow through. Plus the smaller the case, the more expensive it'll probably be.
