True, although he'll need a different board than the Intel i recommended. Up to him whether he wants to spend the extra $

Question:

I have an old desktop that is giving me problems. Is it possible to replace the desktop with a laptop?
I do NO online gaming at all. For web browsing, music downloads, picture editing and light office work.

Any help appreciated.

Yes, &  you could just hook the laptop up to your monitor if you needed a bigger screen

HDMI or VGA to hook it up to your TV, if your laptop has it.
VGA wont give you sound through the TV though.

Some recommendations:
Previously recommended Asus: 15.6in screen, 2.3GHz i5, 6GB ram, 640GB HD for $630
Acer Aspire AS5750: 2.1GHz i3, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD for $450
What i would get personally, especially as a dekstop replacement:
Toshiba Satellite L775D-S7222: 2.3GHZ Quad-Core A6-3400M Processor with Radeon HD 6520M gpu, 6GB ram, 500GBHD for $500

Can someone recommend me a sick laptop?

I will mainly be using it for grad school work heavy on excel and a similar program called argus. My priorities are a quick processor that can handle several programs being open at once, a very long lasting battery, something around 13 to 15", and one that can play blu-ray discs. Budget in the 1k range give or take a couple hundred.

Got my Refurb Visiontek 6950 2gb GPU in the mail yesterday and it is a beaut. Only played Team Fortress 2 so far but it looks awesome. This is my first time having a video card where I can max out settings.

Anybody try that Crysis 2 DirectX11 update yet?
