is it true that the US spends tons on policing?
it seems like it's pretty average.

People want accountable and effective policing,
if you don't address effectiveness the voters will choose unaccountable.

-Calculate .8% of America's GDP. Then tell me how is that not a large figure. Since you like to defend your comments by with the usual "well I didn't say this was not a thing..."

Please can you point out where me the economist made the comment relating it to other countries. Or maybe I just considered a figure that is well north of 100 billion a year and growing a large number. Especially when how much money are allocated to the police in muncipal budgets.

-My post was literally about them being ineffective at their job. Not just that they are not held accountable

But hey, you saw people criticizing the police after murdering a innocent child and you just could let that criticism stand.

Because when a child is murdered people need to focus because of civil servants doing their jobs poorly the Convo needs to focus on....check notes....swing voters.

Ending 2021 just like you did 2020.

To me, killing a child undermines how effectively a community can be policed

Recklessness that leads to the death of innocent people are just gonna raise resentment in neighbors and make more people less likely to want to assist the police and be hostile to their presence.

I would think having communities on your side you benefit police. And recklessly killing a child might turn people against the police, making the polices job that much harder. Raising the chances of more bad outcomes. Including more crime.

Sooo maybe police should not repeat this behavior in the future, because not only can you get the worst outcome of people dying needlessly, you also alienate people in the community.

But yeah, defund the police got popular on Twitter so no one can take issue with the police incompetence unless they balance that with pro cop takes too.

we are dealing with US government by that logic, like literally any amount the US government spends on anything is "large"

if someone said well the US government doesn't spend a lot on xyz part of the welfare state
and a conservative responded with "what do you mean we spend billions???"

id think most people would look at that as a disingenuous argument.

yes it is large in that all figures in government budgets are large
but in comparison to what other governments spend it seems to be average.

how else are you supposed to contextualize US police spending?
it's hard to compare any country to america. because america has so so so many guns

but if you want to understand if police budgets are unreasonable seems like the most obvious place to start would be to look at other countries.

I made a point about how much the government spends
and then pivoted to my larger point about policing.
I didn't say it to imply that you did not address that.

I didn't tell anyone what they need to focus on.

You can describe to me a litany of horrible anecdotes about terrible things that police have done....

but I don't understand how expressing the viewpoint that I believe will lead to LESS dead 14 year old girls

means that I am insufficiently concerned about dead 14 year olds.

100% agree.

People do this thing over and over again

where they post horrible thing a police officer does.
and then imply that I am essentially a supporter of said horrible thing.

so I always think it's important that I repeat for the record my actual view on the subject.

I believe my position will lead to less police violence not more,
this is why i'm so insistent on it

so I find these constant implications, that I do not care,
or that I am somehow a supporter of police violence to be 100% disingenuous troll BS.

So how should I have felt over the past year the numerous time you tried to make me defend **** I didn't say? I remember having to directly tell you a couple of times I didn't support defunding the police. Were you being a disingenuous troll when you try to make people answer for some comment some random Twitter progressive said.

You are not some victim. You just don't enjoy the energy you put out being returned to you

when I did that, i'm pretty sure I said my bad.

the defund the police thing is really hard to pin down given that range of its meanings.

I would have pegged you towards to more nuanced version of defund but ultimately pro budget cuts?
but if you don't fall into that my bad.

I sincerely was not doing that on purpose. and when i did do it, i said my bad.
and if i did it subsequently i apologize. it was not my intention.
