Sorry famb
Because of the great signature shoe and soup wars in the NBA thread I forgot about this.
In short the best way to learn about Abundance is reading Ezra Klein's and Derek Thompson's book. It is not that long. While detailed it is not rigorous so listening to the audio book will do.
Some takeaway takeaways:
-Liberal governance especially on the local and state level no matter how well intentioned is in a place where it doesn't effectively deliver important services to people. Housing, mass transit, green energy
-Overregulation and mandatory requirements for processes to get things done have made everything take way too long, and cost way too much
-Red states are building more housing and green energy that blue states, and for cheaper.
-Governments have outsourced a lot of their functions, and power, to outside groups. Consultants, environmental groups,. NGOs, etc.
-The reasoning for doing this at the time was again well intention, but it is clearly failing, so things need to change.
-Economic growth is important for the goal of social democracy
You should really read the book though. I have been reading these guys stuff when before they even decided to right the book so everything is kinda blending together in my mind.
Now
The reason you hear so much about it is because after its release, many progressives in the far left of the party took major issue with it.
I have read tons of articles criticizing the book, podcast, and interviews between the authors and far left pundits/people
-Pundits agree with nearly all the issues raised in the books
-The fault the book for not criticizing "money interest", or capitalism generally
-The fault the book for not offering solutions that attack moneyed interest
-The accuse the authors of being in bed with people on the right, that want to return the country to right-wing neoliberalism
-Against the idea of deregulation of any kind
-They are pissed at Ezra and Derek for pointing out that often times it is progressive aligned groups that are causing these failures
-And really offer no real alternatives to the issues raised in the book, because once again they low key concede the problems being called out are correct
-Attack the authors' character
The main friction is really with how Derek Thompson is pushing Abundance over Ezra. Ezra is more focused on governing (he is more narrow). Derek kinda sees it as a bigger framework that can be applied to politics generally to break voters out of the scarcity mindset. Because when voters are in that mindset, then right wing populist are at an advantage. But the progressive left see it as a threat to their political project and are attacking it. Especially since a lot of centrist, and center left pundits, policy wonks and politicians seems to really like it.
And yes, because some right wing dudes that don't like progressive politics would like to destroy it, they are championing "Abundance" in bad faith. So that is setting off progressives even more
But without all the other noise. Abundance is just a narrow and accurate critique of left wing governance
