The NFL Network is reporting that the New York Jets have waived quarterback Brett Favre off their reserve/retired list. That means Favre is a free agent and if he elects to unretire (again) can sign with any team. The Jets had Favre's rights before this transaction and at this point there is no indication the future Hall of Famer asked for this move.

But it's certainly going to create speculation. It was around this time last year when Favre got the itch to keep playing after announcing he was retiring from the Green Bay Packers. We all know when the Packers said thanks but no thanks that Favre set his sights on playing for the Vikings. That didn't happen as he was traded to the Jets.

The Jets drafted Southern Cal quarterback Mark Sanchez with the fifth-overall pick in the first round Saturday after trading up and they have no need for Favre, who again called it quits after the 2008 campaign. It's odd the Jets didn't just leave Favre on their reserve/retired list. So could Favre be angling to return again? Unlike last year when the Packers made sure he could not play in Minnesota, this time there would be no such restrictions. He's a now free agent.

Let the speculation begin.

his +$# better not come back...that would be the biggest joke of all time

wait til july when he gets that "itch" again.

I felt last summer like I was the only Minnesota fan who wanted him. As long as that bicep is okay, he's a huge upgrade over Sage (in my opinion at least).

His agent Buzz Cook said today he has no desire to play...but let's just wait until Training Camp and see if anything changes. Chilly needs to get on thesame plane he went and visited Percy in because we landed him with the #22 pick. Lucky plane?

I have no idea what I'm talking about right now though...I'm just happy aboutthe thought of not having Sage under center for us next season.

Do work Zygi.

NEW YORK -- Brett Favre was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets on Tuesday night, making the quarterback a free agent if he decides to again come out of retirement.

Favre

When Favre was dealt to New York from Green Bay in August, there were conditions in the trade that required the Packers to be compensated if the Jets moved the three-time MVP. Those no longer apply if he signs elsewhere.

The 39-year-old Favre, who spent one disappointing season with New York, had requested the move several weeks ago through agent Bus Cook, but insisted he has no plans to come out of retirement for a 19th season.

"Nothing has changed," Favre said in a statement. "At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum also said Favre had not indicated to him any desire to come back.

That, of course, won't stop any of the likely speculation that Favre could end up with any number of teams, especially if the torn biceps tendon that hampered him for much of last season has healed.

After 16 seasons with the Packers, Favre had a tearful retirement in March 2008, but decided to return to football a few months later. Green Bay had already moved forward, anointing Aaron Rodgers the starter as a bitter falling out with Favre ensued.

The Packers traded him to the Jets, injecting excitement into a franchise that hasn't been to a Super Bowl since 1969. Things started off promising as Favre played well and the Jets took over first place in the AFC East, with a playoff run in their sights. But Favre struggled down the stretch with the arm injury as the Jets finished 1-4 and failed to make the playoffs, costing coach Eric Mangini his job.

Favre announced his retirement on Feb. 11, saying he was done with football -- this time for real.
Favre remains retired; for now
April 28th, 2009 - 8:58 PM by Judd Zulgad
While the New York Jets confirmed tonight they have released Brett Favre off their reserve/retired list, the future Hall of Fame quarterback said in a team-issued statement that he isn't coming back. At least for now.

"[Agent] Bus [Cook] and Mike [Tannenbaum, the Jets general manager] have been talking about this for a while," Favre said. "Nothing has changed. At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football."

Tannenbaum also issued a statment in which he said: "Brett requested his release some time ago. He has not indicated any desire to return to football and he remains retired. We wish him the best."

Considering Favre's past history, the key to his statement is "at this time." It's April, folks, there is no reason for Favre, "at this time," to say he's coming back. Remember how this played out last year? It didn't heat up until July. Favre's No. 1 goal then, once he knew he could not return to Green Bay, was to join the Vikings. The addition of wide receiver Percy Harvin on Saturday might (and I said might) have only increased Favre's desire to wear a purple jersey.

Another possibility...

It could be Favre wanting to sign a one-day contract with Green Bay so he could retire as a Packer.

Who knows what's going on in Brett's head though?

I been tired of this dude.. But I kinda wanna see him on the vikings

I wouldn't mind seeing him in Minnesota, he's definitely better than whoever they have right now

This dude is off his rocker...but I'd like to see him on the Vikings as well.

very practical to see two of the NFLs biggest faces in John Madden and Brett Favre retire at the same time.
