Scroll to bottom for TL;DR

4 years of school (Fall 14), started in marketing, switched bc im terrible @ math and barely got past the basic college algebra...switched to comm for a year this past fall switched to Interdisciplinary Studies just to get out as fast as possible...early 20's

****** up in a few (a good bit of) classes bc my focus was divided between beatmaking/arts and not really wanting to be in school for anything other than a degree to make it easier getting jobs and took a semester off to try to pursue music production so probably a year left on my current path.

an old female relative of a friend kept it real with me during small talk about the futility of Interdisciplinary Studies degrees when it came to getting jobs. she been working in education for decades, hiring people and whatnot.

My career goals is like a Pharrell type dude who has his hands in a lot of things but I guess the most tangible money making things I’d do would be songwriting/music production, clothing designs and I got hella app and product ideas that would be easier to get rolling with the visibility that came with music and fashion. I also wanna maybe make music myself as a vocalist but I havent really had the resources to really explore that seriously and wanna get into that this year and definitely while I'm still in the first half of my 20's bc nobody really tryna hear aspiring urban musicians as is, let alone one that's in their 30's and haven't made it.

Been making beats for almost 10 years though (damn time flies) since summer 2010 lex luger era. The semester off taught me that I don't wanna be chasing artists around so I kinda wanna make my own **** and also you need money for whatever you wanna do in the entertainment industry, whether it's recording or videos for yourself as an artist or even just being able to stay afloat with necessities in an entertainment city on your own, like a New York or Atlanta or LA.

Seems to be a lot of dudes in their upper 20's and 30's on here so I guess the point of this thread is keep it real on the prospect of job opportunities that come with IDS majors and also advice on my path, should I just thug out the degree and see what job opportunities it may get me or should I embrace that I fumbled college as a whole and should go hard looking for a **** 9-5 that I'm gonna end up with anyways with an IDS degree and pursue my artistic **** during the night.

What air condition and collared shirt jobs do those without college degrees have and would this IDS degree increase my earning potential.

Tried to keep the background info as slim as possible

In all seriousness, you kinda screwed yourself in the short term. You are gonna have to hustle to get yourself out of it. You could maybe go the IT route and do some certs in hopes of getting a help desk job. Maybe even think about trade school of some sort. You need to get some work experience under your belt to not only keep yourself in the job market but to put things in perspective.

If your vocation is worth it then you gotta be willing to work on it along with a regular job for the time being, because of the reality of the situation is that you're right about hitting the job market fresh in your 30s with little experience and a degree like that. You took that path of least resistance to get through college, you can't take it again.

But I would be too down on yourself, **** ups happen my dude. I got an economics degree but got **** grades which locked me out of jobs, even worst the economy was struggling at the time. I had to suck it up for a couple years working construction, landscaping, tutoring, washing dishes, and in a bakery while I was studying for the GRE and retaking math classes to prep for grad school. It did this in my mid-20s. Time is on your side, you just have to be willing to swallow your pride and do what is necessary.

Seems somewhat unrealistic. If you are in college just to get a degree you might as well go into a trade or something.

I got a ******** degree myself and now I’m working a blue collar job that I absolutely hate and I’m just sitting here waiting until I can retire or die.

I got a bull**** degree myself and now I’m working a blue collar job that I absolutely hate and I’m just sitting here waiting until I can retire or die.

What's your degree and what's your job?

Psychology and I’m not saying what I do. I already had one weirdo on another website who tried to ruin my life by me giving out too much info.

It’s a blue collar job though.

Word appreciate the reply.

I was thinking about switching my IDS "focus" to IT just because you gotta be good with computers to get all the beat software and plugins for free lol and I always solve computer problems for my friends, so it wouldn't be completely new and it seems like I'd be able to find a job but even then I'd have maybe a year's worth of classes and employers would be like "why isn't that your major?".

Would you finish the degree or just go to a local temp agency tomorrow and begin the process of focusing on bread and moving on from school? I took a semester off this time last year, then went back in the fall and it's a weird feeling for a whole year to pass by and you ain't really get closer to what you really wanna do in life. This the first year of my life where I could damn near remember every day vividly if I could use my iPhone camera roll.

Have you ever received feedback on your artistic pursuits? I feel like that could help with a thread like this because as cold as NT can sometimes be, in the end, if you some hot garbage then you need to get that degree and try your hand at job hunting ... perhaps switch disciplines again to maximize what you've taken already in pursuit of something more lucrative ...

Generally speaking, you sound like you're destined to abuse some sort of substance ...

Word def understand that and that's the nervousness I'm feeling.

Majors outside of IT, Lawyers, Doctors, etc. you can really only teach to the next generation. I don't wanna be a music/beat teacher as if that's really in demand.

If you can afford it, finish the degree famb. Some jobs will not even hire you if you don't have a college degree. You are narrowing your prospects even further without it. If you could change the focus, I would do that.

Would it be longer if you switched the degree to IT? You could also thug it out and work on some certs and get a quick help desk gig. If you can finish any degree sooner it would be better, I've come across dudes with journalism and Japanese degrees etc in IT, it doesn't matter so much as experience .

Also a ton of musicians btw

Could be worth exploring streaming companies? Tidal, Spotify, (Soundcloud still a thing?), Apple Music, and YouTube all have work that involves content curation and such...Given that you clearly have passion and a natural acumen for music I don't see how you can start small and work your way to a role that really suits you, despite the degree. Unfortunately, I think the only real blemish would be (as im reading it) a lack of internships...also finish the degree.

A brief overview for me if it helps: I graduated with a degree in Ethnic Studies, focusing on non-profit work and government. I had internships from local NPOs and interned at the city and state levels of gov. After I graduated I had my heart set on a Fellowship in SF, which i thought was going to streamline my career towards civic service and eventually a masters. Ended up missing the cut to become a fellow.

I then went eight months unemployed. I moved back in with my parents and needed to find recourse on what I wanted to do. I found a contract job as a coordinator at a top 5 tech company (a coordination job dont really need a specific degree...you just play tetris with people's calendars) BUSTED MY *** for 1 year and 8 months with a daily commute of 4 hours total. I just got fulltime work at said company as their new diversity strategist.

My degree in ethnic studies by convention would not have taken me to silicon valley...but if you have drive, patience, and a little luck you mind end up somewhere that's actually worth it. If you have any more questions man just PM me

people always tell me they are crazy, make a lot of my sounds from scratch (people have tried to take 808s off my computer and offer me money on the spot for them) and think I'm skilled at it...but it ain't food or water. I'm not the type of ***** who likes to chase people around to get on my beats either which is kinda why I wanna go into streetwear because it's more guaranteed money and I don't have to *** myself out the way you do in beatmaking (Send out hella free/cheap beats and hope one blows to get ur name hot). In beatmaking it's less about talent now that everything is trap beats and more about that opportunity coming or never coming.

This is probably gonna give me up if the right person comes across this but FUBU asked me for contact info to design when I made like a poster/art for them...they never followed up on it though.

My skill is what I'm least worried about. It's just the time and resources to turn that into something tangible.

And yes I consume a lot of weed thru blunts and bong contraptions  and admittedly that's probably a big hindrance aside from not having a set goal up until this point.

But out of curiosity why do you say that "destined"

I'm gonna see about that when I talk to my counselor but at this point I'm just not tryna be in school for 6 years for a bachelors. I was tryna be done by Dec 2019 at the latest.

And wym by last sentence, ton of musicians in IT?

Mainly because the people who succeed without a college degree / trade background are the exception and not the rule ...

It is far more likely that you succeed if you "play it safe" and finish your degree, and pursue the arts in your spare time ...

Word appreciate that PM offer.

My mom was saying the same thing in how she got a degree in one thing and really hasn't worked in her field, just going through jobs that like you said, just require a certain level of common sense/intelligence.

As far as the streaming internships/jobs, I'd love that but I'm not really in a big city. I actually think streaming is replacing labels and they need more a la carte content creators. But I feel like with stuff like that it's more about what you've done in the industry moreso than your degree which is why my focus has been split on tryna really figure out what type of name I wanna make for myself and how I wanna make it because that's what matters in entertainment/music moreso than paper qualifications.

That's another thing I wanted to move to a bigger city for internships and networking opportunities but I got this degree in this middle of nowhere town I gotta finish.

Means there's actually quite a few folks that had the same idea. They do their amateur music thing with IT as their day job.

I definitely agree but damn what that gotta do with substance abuse  if that's the question you were answering

Yeah I highkey wish that was my major from jump I probably would have graduated on time. Switched from Marketing to Comm to IDS

I feel like everyone born after the mid-80s has a base understanding of IT just from recreational **** they did on the computers like downloading music/software, social media coding, etc.

What are some specific IT jobs/duties?

OP I know I clown the **** you be posting in RAN and what not but in all seriousness look into trades.

There's a lot of good money to be made.

word what are some of the highest paying trades?

so you wanna be Hollywood? Pepper da angus

:rollin

I just wanna make dope **** and find ways to be compensated. Make movies, sell them to streaming entities, produce/write songs for people, do clothes, interactive app exeriences etc. Right now tho I’m probably strongest in design and music production/somgwriting.

Pharrell/Ye type **** but they only were afforded those opportunities after they had hit records and albums.
