ill keep it simple hopeing that this thread will hold a conversation.
Alright, so i was in physics today watching a movie (the right stuff) and my teacher stoped the movie and made a great point that got me thinking. He commentedon how after sputnik was launched (which was a huge threat to america) all of our money went into education. Then he commented on how today with the situationwere in how we are cutting education funds and using those funds for bombs. I dont get it....Your thoughts.

Things were a $$%+ ton different then and with the OH SO AMAZING WAR that out AMAZING president Bush started in Iraq that sucking out BILLIONS. Those billionsthat could have been spent to increase education and infrastructure went to war

it's tough to converse about this, because we could be spending money on education but we're spending it on war. I'm pretty sure that no one isgonna agree with cutting education cost for war.

yea, but they were just begining the cold war at the time and all of the money still went into education. ill just quote a qoute that i like thats somewhatinvolves this and im sure the quote isnt word for word right. "it will be a great day when the army has to have a bake sale to get a new jet."

It's not just education.

Nonprofit funding has been cut a lot more than education.

It's sickening.

(for the record, I'd rather have it be non-profit than education, but still..

Our country's education is seriously in major need of help.

Its sad to see our money being used in foreign soils and not improving our nation's infrastructure.
If you look at other countries, they tend not to bother with foreign affairs, but yet we always have to nose in to other countries affairs.

I know its our duty to police the world a bit, but with our country struggling this much, its just sad how its highly ignored.
Maybe its just not brought to the mainstream media, but i really think something needs to be done about it.

yes, that was one of the things talked about at the united nations meeting. Obama said, not his words, just the way my history teacher put it. If we dontstart getting help from other countries were just going to get ours.

^Word, if we just focus the next 4 years on improving our country, i think things will be much better nationwide.
We can't just hop out of a recession and stay the same for the next few years, that just makes us prone to be back in a recession.

We need to change dramatically and move ahead, if money isn't spent on schools for the future, how are we gonna be able to compete with China and India?
It doesn't make sense to cut funds and save money today. The money that goes into schools can provide our future generation with more knowledge which inturn will make them smarter, have more jobs, and make more money for the country.

yes, that was the idea in the 1940s i think correct me if im wrong but if we cut the education were not going to be educated for the future.

This is the problem. We honestly think that we need to "police the world" when things would be much better off if we kept out of otherpeoples affairs.

(Not counting the ones we indirectly or directly caused i.e. Unjust treatment of the Palestinian people, Afghanistan falling apart at the seams and fallingunder the control of the Taliban, numerous problems with dictators across the world that we put in power etc etc. Fixing these problems is a MUST because greatnumbers of people have been affected by our leaders ignorance and egotism.)

Also, at that time we needed our students to be the best and brightest. We were in the middle of a crisis with another super power and had to keep up to crushthem. With this need to have our young be the best and brightest they could be came a great deal of animosity when the government did something immoral or notin the best interest of the country. Now, we don't have a global competitor on the opposite side of the spectrum to worry about, so we can basically breeda select few to become the best and brightest, usually the rich, and the rest of the masses can argue amongst themselves about who has the nicest shoes on, orwho the better rapper is that day. It leads to the governments job being that much easier because there is little to no dissent.
