San Francisco startup Coin today announced its first product — a credit card-sized device that digitally stores up to eight credit, debit, gift, or membership cards, and lets you switch between them by pressing a circular button on its surface. You can then swipe the Coin in any conventional reader or ATM machine as if it were the original card itself.

Coin works using a patent-pending magnetic strip that changes on demand. The device ships with a small reader you use to scan cards into the Coin mobile app, which then syncs with the device itself over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), the same power-sipping protocol used by many fitness trackers and smartwatches. Coin’s battery lasts two years, the company says, and powers a tiny display that shows the last four digits of the card you’ve currently chosen to use, as well as its expiration date and CVV. Since Coin stays in constant contact with your phone using the same BLE tech that powers syncing with a phone, if you leave it behind at a restaurant, your phone will alert you once you walk away. Coin is up for pre-order today for $50, but will cost $100 for new buyers when it ships in summer 2014.

What do you think about this? With NFC & Mobile payments slow out of the gate I feel that this can really take off if they add a fingerprint scanner for security.

I saw this a little while ago and was actually eager to get one but from what I understand, your credit card info is stored on the phone and not the device. When I realized it could not be used without a phone it was less desirable to me.

Also, what would you do when someone needs your card and ID to match the name and last four digits like they do at a lot of stores in the mall now?

i rather carry multiple cards

what if this has an error? i dont want to be at some restaurant when the waiter comes up to me and says card cant go through for whatever reason

It's almost outright trippy how many repeat threads there have been lately :lol

There were like 4 threads for the "Knockout Game", this is the second one on this so far this week, two about that dad in Tennessee who got arrested trying to pick his kids up, and I probably missed some.

It's going to need some kind of fingerprint scanner like on the iPhone to lock it on a certain card. I don't want to hand over my card and they press the button and select a different one card to be charged.

bought one a couple of days ago. it's convenient, because I have a small card holder instead of a full wallet. this will make it easier. i'll always keep one extra card with me anyway just in case the coin stops working for some strange reason.

I heard this will be obsolete soonish (1 year?) tho because they will be changing the security protocols for cards. Seems awesome enough though. Kinda silly in my opinion though...a bandaid solution to a we are tech lazy country.

I'm in Korea and I went to Pizza Hut...same company, same etc and they had this thing on the table that was just a tiny piece of plastic. Was curious so had my gf download the app, and all she had to do was touch her phone to the plastic on the table and it paid for our food. Mind was blown. Most things over here are like that though. They have a movie app called CGV (similar to AMC, but better quality) and you can preselect seats at every theater. Got a button on tables at restaurants to call the waiter over instead of them hovering and asking you questions during your meal.

I'm interested in this as well but would like to wait til others have experienced and reported the early bugs or problems with the first iteration.

Those feels when you only have and use one card.

One of my friends pre-ordered one of these a month or two ago. Looks really cool, but I'm gonna wait for the 2nd version just to be safe.
