In this day in age it's hard to tell kids to go to school and get a good job when we have people like Soulja Boy, Mark Zuckenburg (sp), etc.

Hell look at the Forbes list of wealthiest people in the world, how many of them graduated from college? College is an old and tired dream the youth doesn't believe in but can you blame them?

....dissapointments? nah, i just couldnt help but notice the flawed system everyone is using in an effort to get through to these kids, as i used those same methods myself. the 'as long as you reach one' approach never sat well with me, and i think alot more can be done if we start from scratch and try thinking outside the box instead of using the same methods that have been used for who knows how long just to settle for bare minimum results.
 
- i was one of those youths, and ive worked with those kids, so ive seen both sides of the fence.
 
.....the program i worked for was the worst of the worst. it was a juvenile prison in florida, and the kids i worked with had substance abuse issues that ranged from hard core drug abuse, to dealing. hell, we even had a 16 year old meth chemist at one time. however all of our kids didnt have the substance abuse issues, only a select group of 40, the rest were just doing time.
 
...i have a plan ive been working on that i think will revolutionize our approach. but i have yet to really lay it out properly. i will soon. its just that until that time the only kid worth my time is my own. i dont even help/try to talk sense to my little cousins and siblings anymore.....

If an educator or social worker cannot refute these idiotic points, the blame is on them. Both of Zuck's parents are highly educated. He would never be where he is without them.

I'm always torn with this topic. On one hand it's not their fault they are uninterested and at the same time it is, slightly. Parents certainly are the biggest factor I think. I regularly volunteer and help lead an outreach program that brings underrepresented and/or impoverished middle school girls to a university to teach them or show them how cool science, engineering, and computers are. During these events I see so much hope and so much disappointment. Just like all other aspects of life I suppose; when it come to our generation (20s) and younger.

It's the system itself. A college degree barely guarantee's you an interview these days let alone a good job or career. Those people you mentioned have done nothing but dis-spell  the myth that you need to go to college to become successful. The system needs re-tuning so that kids can gain a higher form of education sooner than later. You attend grades K-12 gaining slightly advanced forms of the same information as the years progress and it doesn't help you when you have to face the realities of everyday life. That's why kids who are going through it and parents who have been through it don't take it seriously. I went through public school and college and I didn't take it seriously from the first day I entered pre-school and they asked us to sleep on cots during "naptime." The only reason why I didn't end up where most of my peers went was because I had parents who taught me more than school ever did. (How to read, write, count, manners and common sense.) You go to public schools and you can see and feel the system failing and it's disheartening. I feel for you teachers and students.
You leave high school and go to a decent college and it's like traveling into the future. New everything, everywhere. New books, desks, seats and it's glorious but often times the harsh truth comes to the light. You can get that higher education but  if you still have to go back to those broken environments it all becomes a wash. And if a degree can't take you from that (which kids feel like it can't), then they're attitude switches to,"whats the point?"

Everything they need to know about the world they learn it out in the streets and they learn it fast. So if the things that they learn in school aren't applicable in the real world they'll quickly lose faith in the system. Not only do we need new schools, we need new curriculum's, new city's, a new environment...Look how Detroit crumbled, look what happens to the towns ravaged by natural disasters in the U.S. Look at the Bronx, Brooklyn etc. Prime opportunities to rebuild society and correct a ton of it's problems but who will step up?

I work (now part time) at an at-risk school K-12 for kids with emotional issues, neuro issues and the ones who get expelled/suspended long term. I've officially given up on assuming that the future generations are going to lead our world into a bright, big tomorrow.
The parents don't care and aren't around/educated themselves. The kids don't care because they're all convinced they'll live in the basement the rest of their lives/get an apartment/ hustle.
Not a single one of these kids has their head on straight and are making any kind of effort to better their stature. I also do two days a week in a middle school and the kids there are no different... just more delusional/caught up in the MTV world.
I feel like I've got my head on straight now (I'm 30) and it took me forever to get there, but I NEVER got stagnant with my studies no matter how wild I was with my personal life. I'd fail all my classes but one, but at least there were 3-4 credits I'd never have to give back. I'm terrified at who my child's peers will be in 10-15 years with the slow de-evolution of our species.

What are you talking about? This is from OP's post:

That is exactly the student's fault. You even touched upon that in several of your posts. I'm not sure what you think would be in this thread if you didn't want people to call out the kids who just don't give a %*%%.

You should probably care just enough for the sake of your own future, if not yours then your families, friends, or future children.These kids will grow up to become apart of society, what role they will play correlates to how they view their tomorrows. It takes a village to raise a child.I've only skimmed through the thread. Too many blocks of quote to read through. I will say to the Op that your presence in the schools is doing these kids no justice. Find a new career path.

This a depressing thread, but it is true. I am currently in a program where i go to a high school to teach some key concepts of a subject. These kids DO NOT try. They want the answers given to them and even then they do not take up a little time to try and understand.

Many of the kids in that class i overhear talking about random things. One that student was talking about how he was going to be a father. I was not sure if he was serious, but these kids are in ninth grade.

It's crazy because i am sure these public schools do not prepare enough for the college life as much as they should.

At the end of our session on Monday we talked to them with the teacher telling them about how REAL it is. We told them about where we come from and how we got where we are.

It is a scary thought to think about the future with so many kids not caring.

To an extent...but could you seriously name a person who is the person they grew up to be at the tender age of 11 maybe 12? Not really, if any. There's still hope for some of those kids, hell...there's even hope for some of those %*%!%%#! that go to your high school...they just need a reality check.

To address the issue in your hood(if you can even call a place with over 100k median income, that), SCshift you probably don't see the sort of things the OP is speaking upon. By no means are the students that OP or any others in here working with suffering from how spoiled they are. Their apathy and disinterest in school comes from a much different perspective than those born with a silver spoon in their mouth.

As tragic as it is, there is only so much you can do for someone. Sometimes even with all the resources available, people still choose to ignore them. This happens in both low and high income schools. I went to a middle class high school and the amount of dropouts was astonishing. Short of holding their hands or forcing them to help themselves, they have to help themselves
